I've been a psychotherapist for over 40 years. What I have found is the most powerfull tool is the relationships I develop with my clients which are often deeply meaningful, based on understanding the depth of the person, often extending to the inclusion of spiritual experience. I am a fully trained marriage and family therapist, and I have graduated from the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Institute as a certified Psychoanalyst. The American Psychoanalytic Institute has awarded me the status of a Training and Supervising Analyst, the highest level of certification awarded. I want to help people find their own sense of truth.

People come to therapy for many reasons. In the first few sessions, I want to get to know you--what you are struggling with, your hopes and fears for the future, what seems to be getting in the way, what strengths and assets you bring. Together, we arrive at a plan, identifying your goals, sources of distress, and how best to work toward symptom relief and greater satisfaction with life and relationships. My approach integrates several treatment modalities, including psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness-based therapies, life-span developmental approaches, attachment theory, family and couples therapy.

I am a firm believer that understanding how health concerns and physical symptoms can show up hand in hand with mental health is incredibly valuable. I believe that the better you understand how your body and mind interact, the more ability you will have to manage symptoms. I have been trained to work with trauma, substance abuse, PTSD, chronic illness, family systems, couples, children, groups & individuals. My unique background having worked in medicine also helps in working with individuals with chronic illness. My time in EMS can aid in working with individuals from the military, emergency services & medical personnel.

Deciding to ask for help when dealing with life's struggles is a very important step. Finding the right person to work with is equally important. I am happy to meet with you and let you know where I would focus. If you decide we are not the right fit I will help you find the person that is right for you.

I enjoy working with couples and individuals of all ages who are struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, parenting issues, and relational challenges such as infidelity. I consider much of what I do to be allowing client's to gently and curiously grow in their ability to reflect on the stories they have formed about their journey. I have a great deal of gratitude for the deep, sometimes painful, places my clients allow me to explore alongside them. Regardless of where you find yourself, I would be honored to sit with you.

Quality of life is determined by balancing life's critical components. Dr.Alfred Adler created Individual Psychology based on these components. Adler developed : OUR LIFE TASKS 1. An adequate sense of self 2. The connection to a significant other. 3. A purpose driven life. 4. Spirituality, a belief in something more than yourself. Dr. Adler believed being unbalanced in any of these areas created uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. A continuation of and consequence of these thoughts and feeling is psychological dysfunction.

I work with people who have symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, and with people who feel as though they are not moving forward in life in the ways they had hoped. They may feel frustrated that they are not finding satisfying relationships or the gratifying career that they had always thought they would.

Psychotherapy is something that happens between people...you and me. It is a process that I expertly and sensitively guide, but it is something that we experience together. Relationships, past and present, may be a source of pain, frustration, or fear...but they are also the key to unlocking your full potential. Together, we will work to alleviate your most pressing problems as well as to develop a fuller understanding of the deeper, underlying issues that keep you stuck in emotional and relational patterns that limit your capacity to more fully give and receive love.

We have multiple talented clinicians. Our approach to therapy is informed primarily by psychodynamic principles. The emphasis is on creating a safe, supportive environment in which to explore and develop insights into underlying feelings and thoughts. Together we will uncover deeply held assumptions that, although may have been useful at one time, today reinforce ways of coping in the world that are no longer effective or relevant.

Psychoanalytic Therapists

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?

Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?

Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?

Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?

Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
