If you are tired of trying to think your way through problems which are in large part caused by overthinking, ERP might be right for you.
I specialize in the treatment of OCD, hoarding disorder, and all other anxiety-related disorders: social anxiety, phobias, panic disorder, PTSD, generalized anxiety, tics, and body-focused repetitive behaviors (e.g., nail-biting). As part of my practice, the primary treatment for these conditions is exposure and response prevention therapy, or ERP. What maybe differentiates my practice from others whose principal therapeutic modality is ERP is that I am able to accept a wide variety of insurances. Additionally, I am one of very few clinicians in the state of Minnesota who specializes in the treatment of hoarding disorder.

I see clients in California and MN for telehealth psychotherapy. In my practice, I help people overcome their personal obstacles to change and get unstuck. Together, we identify those issues which we can change and those that we can accept. Over the past 30 years, I have helped people create healthy movement in their lives and to develop a balanced design for living that can serve as a foundation for years to come. I strive to provide an atmosphere that is respectful and safe. It is very important to me that clients know that they have a voice in the treatment process so that the treatment is individualized to meet their needs.

You're not broken, you're just human. We all experience difficulty throughout our lives, and when life feels hard, it can be so easy to get caught up in thoughts like, "It'll never get better," or to feel anxious, overwhelmed, and discouraged. Before too long, you might realize you're far from the life you'd imagined, or the person you'd hoped to be.

We have received intensive training in Exposure Response and Prevention Therapy (ERP)—the gold standard treatment for OCD.
I have a pretty flexible approach to therapy. You can expect a steady flow of smiley faces in your messaging inbox, but you are not obligated to respond. My focus allows for a completely unique experience for every member. I tend to get along well with members who are very particular about details because I care about the mapping of your OCD being accurate to your experience. The only thing more important is that you feel like you have agency throughout the entire therapy process. At NOCD, my team and I specialize in providing evidence-based treatment for people with OCD.

We have received training in evidence-based treatments, including Exposure Response and Prevention (ERP) therapy—the gold standard treatment for OCD.
I've always been interested in mental health and how the brain operates in response to certain triggers. The most gratifying part of my job is helping others become their best selves. I treat OCD with compassion and patience. It's important to communicate and work together to improve symptoms. At NOCD, my team and I provide personalized and effective specialized treatment for OCD and related conditions, such as BFRBs (including skin-picking, nail-biting, and hair-pulling). Our understanding of the nuances of these conditions enables us to diagnose and treat them properly.

Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Therapists

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?

Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviors that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.

Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioral therapy?

Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioral change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.

How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?

While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.

What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?

The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
