My approach to therapy is warm, relational, and supportive. I practice a blend of trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches, as well as therapeutic interventions based in attachment, collaborative, and systemic models of therapy. I believe you are the expert on yourself and your experiences. My role is to help you figure out what needs to happen to accomplish your goals, whether that means learning new skills to face life’s challenges, navigating relational stress, processing highly stressful or traumatic experiences, or something else entirely. I also believe humor and fun are integral parts of the therapeutic experience.

What do you do when you are spinning in circles and have no earthly idea where to begin? Is your relationship with those most important to you floundering? Do you struggle with feelings of acceptance, of yourself, by family members, by society? Do you struggle to believe the phrase, "You are enough!"? I offer a strengths-based, collaborative and non-judgmental approach to relational work.
We can often find ourselves struggling to feel understood by each other. I meet with adult individuals or couples seeking help and encouragement as they navigate their relationships. Issues around communicating needs, conflict in their partnership, parenting, intercultural relationships, dynamics within family of origin or in-laws, work/life balance and couples that identify as LGBTQIA+ are all areas I'm familiar working with. I invite clients to create and practice new tools to better understand one another and emerge out bickering and into a collaboration.

I began working as a therapist in a Community Health Center seeing individuals, couples and families with minor to severe mental health issues, many suffering from past trauma. This led me to seek more education, supervision and training to help treat those reporting trauma and dissociative symptoms. Now, I mainly work with individuals dealing with complex trauma and dissociative disorders, though I still see some couples/families where one member is dealing with trauma-related dissociative symptoms. I work collaboratively, partnering with people to help resolve lingering past and current issues to achieve their stated goals.

Finding the optimal therapeutic fit is a bit like going on a blind date... you hope for the best and prepare for the worst. People who think I'm a fit are often high-achieving individuals with an acute awareness of the issue, feel they have tried "everything" to fix it, and are giving therapy “one last chance.” I successfully get clients “unstuck” by challenging them in unconventional, collaborative ways. I intentionally push people 20% past where they are comfortable (because that’s where the growth happens!) and practice pivoting to ensure you have the skills to navigate, manage, and address the discomfort long-term.

I have over a decade of experience as a Psychotherapist, helping clients recover from trauma, manage ADHD, anxious and depressive symptoms, deconstruct their faith systems, reduce destructive behavioral patterns, sort through charged memories, and deal with their complicated in-laws. I have an eclectic approach, and I specialize in utilizing EMDR, IFS, and CBT frameworks. I truly believe everything is connected, both internally and externally. Thus, it is imperative to account for the 'whole person' in order for therapy to be effective. I also think it's important to laugh once in a while.

Relational Therapists

How does relational therapy work?

Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.

Is relational therapy evidence-based?

Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.

How long are people typically in relational therapy?

Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.

Does relational therapy work?

While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
