I've had the honor of journeying with hundreds of people over the last 35 years who are facing difficult life transitions. I value people's strengths, experience, knowledge and dreams in THEIR counseling, and I believe deeply that we all can change in profound ways.

I truly enjoy working with people who come to therapy to explore and heal their relationships with their bodies and mind, and I collaboratively work with my clients to help them decide on goals and focus. I strive to be a guide in helping each person use their own knowledge, wisdom, and connection to find hope, meaning, healing and behavioral change. While the length of time people are in therapy varies greatly, I generally see people for shorter-term courses of therapy, in blocks of 12-16 sessions followed by a break to maximize behavioral change and encourage self-direction in the process, though many people decide to continue on.

Welcome. I’m glad you’re here; seeking therapy takes courage. Do you feel disconnected from yourself or others and find yourself hiding the innermost parts of yourself? On the outside, you may appear you’ve got everything together, but on the inside you feel inadequate, not worthy, or unlovable. Have you found yourself tearing up at “inner child” TikToks? Are you feeling ready to dig into the “tough stuff” from your past? I can help.

My specialty is working with adults with histories of trauma, anxiety, or who are in the middle of a difficult life transition. My clients have experienced moments where something was “too much, too fast” and since then struggled with the effects of that experience.

We each have unique experiences, personal strengths and challenges that shape how we move throughout the world. Whether recognized or not by others, those of us who live them know the truth; our experiences as racial, sexual, gender or ethnic minorities impact many aspects of our existence. Similarly, individuals who live with seen and unseen disabilities, as well as personal trauma, utilize quiet resilience to cope with challenges that remain invisible to others. Sometimes practical problem -solving contributes to change. Other times, the realities of life cannot be altered, they must be walked through courageously and presently.

Accepting residents of MN. Do you often feel misunderstood, scared, stuck, unheard, or like you don't matter? Sometimes life experiences have us feeling like we are constantly struggling or fighting to survive. Maybe you feel like it's difficult to connect with others or even find it difficult to love yourself. This can leave you feeling lonely and unsure of the future, possibly even unsure if you can trust anyone to understand your struggles. I have interest in helping those who struggle with chronic pain, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, grief, and psychological trauma.

I like to think that I specialize in people, not issues. I feel that rapport and trust are the foundation of any relationship which is why I do not narrow my practice down to specific populations or issues. I like to consider myself an open book, and as long as it doesn’t become about me, I am happy to share my successes and failures with anyone who can learn from them. I have a wide range of humor, and connect with sarcasm, banter, and always a good joke. I am here for you (whoever you are). I adjust my approach to what works best for you – I do not expect you to have to conform to my therapeutic approaches.

Chronic Illness Therapists

How does therapy for chronic illness work?

Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.

Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?

Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?

No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.

How long does therapy for chronic illness take?

There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
