My orientation is based in client-centered, strength-based narrative therapy, CBT, and motivational interviewing.
Available to work with any individual or couple in Minnesota, I approach therapy with a deeply empathetic and a client-centered focus. My interests lie in assisting individuals struggling with trauma & grief, anxiety & depression, and life transitions. When neglected, these issues can snowball into more problems that can alter your daily functioning. You may find you've been experiencing disordered eating, relational issues, sexual health changes, diminished self worth, and/or sleep disorders. I also work with couples dealing with infidelity, infertility, sexless marriage, power dynamics, unmet needs, and ruptured communication.

Seeking help from a therapist can be a difficult decision. Successful therapy is highly based on the client-therapist relationship as well as openness to change. I have a warm eclectic style that creates a trusting therapeutic environment. I work with children, adolescents, adults, couples and families to address unhealthy patterns that keep them stuck in emotional distress and unfulfilling relationships. I treat a variety of issues including trauma, abuse, depression, anxiety, spiritual and relationship issues.

If you are here, you may be an individual with complex trauma, or someone who is struggling with post traumatic stress. These symptoms can include depression, anxiety, dissociation, flashbacks, looping self critical thoughts, a deep feeling of abandonment, and challenges within relationships with loved ones. Whether you are an individual looking to work on your own healing, or the parent of a child or teen who is struggling, I may be a good fit for your therapy needs.

I would be honored to hear your story regardless of what stage of life you are currently experiencing. I believe it is important to understand one's story in the context of their relationships and family patterns. Using a strength based approach, I will assist you in finding support and healing as you change and grow through life's changes. I also promote early intervention with children. Play is the language of children and is used to promote growth and development.

Everyone is the hero or heroine of their own story, but sometimes life happens, and those stories can get off track or turned around. Ben is passionate about helping people get their stories back on track. Therapy begins with a supportive and accepting place to tell those stories. Ben’s therapy style is warm and accepting, with clients as the experts on who they are, where they are in life, and where they want to go. Through creative and collaborative efforts that start from clients’ strengths and goals for themselves, change can come at personal and interpersonal levels.

Megan’s ideal client is a child, adolescent, partners, or parent(s) seeking understanding, meaning, and healing in their life and in their relationships. Often, these are clients that have already begun their journey; they’ve read books, taken quizzes, or have completed a workbook and yet, it’s still not working. The ideal client is ready to try something different to reach their potential. Honoring our humanity and the world we live in, I utilize an umbrella approach that begins with a Trauma-Informed and Attachment Lens. Narrative Therapists

Is narrative therapy evidence-based?

Narrative therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy. Some small studies do show that depressed and anxious individuals who were treated with narrative therapy reported improvement in anxiety and depression symptoms.

How long does narrative therapy last?

Narrative therapy is less structured when compared with psychoanalysis, for example. Narrative therapy is more open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a few months, and sometimes a year or longer. Patients see their therapist one to two times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a person’s challenges and progress. Individuals can also practice the principles of narrative therapy after treatment has ended.

Does narrative therapy work?

Narrative therapy can help a person manage or reduce symptoms of conditions like depression or anxiety. This type of therapy encourages a person to reflect on the moments of their life when their particular problem was not at the forefront of their minds—perhaps life celebrations, achievements, and other successes. The individual is encouraged to rewrite their storyline as if their particular problem was not part of their life. This therapy may offer benefits that are hard to measure.

What are the possible limitations of narrative therapy?

Narrative therapy is person-centered or client-centered, and the health professional pays more attention to the subjective narratives that are constructed by the client, as opposed to other objective measures. The therapist privileges the individual’s perspective over all others. This open form may feel frustrating for individuals seeking a more structured approach; certainly, no one therapy type will work for every individual.
