Do experiences from the past keep coming back to haunt you? Are you stuck and find that your past still impacts your mood, sleep, health, and behaviors well after the experience? Maybe you recreate harmful patterns and are troubled by emotions and memories from an experience long ago. The past not only impacts you but those around you. Some many find themselves angry and irritable and others use substances to numb their pain or engage in behaviors that you know will hurt you, your relationship, or your family in the long run. Despite everything you have tried, you cannot find peace.

Every person needs a secure space where they can become their most authentic selves. I strive to approach therapy with radical genuineness, compassion, warmth, and humor. This creates an environment where you can be yourself and learn to manage thoughts and emotions getting in your way. I like to incorporate techniques from DBT, Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered Therapy, attachment theory, body-centered approaches, sports psychology, mindfulness, body positivity, trauma-informed practices, and sometimes a dash of geek culture references.

I believe in incorporating a positive psychological and holistic approach to the individuals I serve. By incorporating an overall wellness and "whole mind/body" approach with individuals, I believe each person can get the best out of themselves through mental health therapy. I utilize evidenced based clinical counseling techniques such as ACT, Mindfulness, CBT, Motivational Interviewing, and a variety of sport counseling/psychology modalities into practice. Lastly, I take an individual approach to every person I treat, knowing that every person is different and deserves authentic, genuine, and exceptional mental health care.

I help children, adolescents, and young adults become the best version of themselves mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally. I understand the demands and pressures placed on them and utilize a “Values, Holistic, Mindfulness, Well-being” model to help them achieve “Psychological Flexibility.” This means becoming more aware of thoughts and feelings, having more control over actions and performance, and becoming the best version of themselves.

Sports Performance Therapists

How does sports psychology work?

Sports psychology helps athletes identify and overcome challenges, such as perfectionism or a fear of failure, and improve key mental skills, such as confidence or concentration. By applying principles and techniques from psychology, such as goal-setting, visualization, positive self-talk, and emotion regulation, sports psychologists help athletes improve their performance on the field and their well-being overall.

How long does treatment for a sports-related problem take?

The duration of sports psychology treatment depends on the athlete’s individual challenges, goals, the complexity of the interventions used, and even on the length of the season. A performance anxiety issue may be treated with a short-term treatment, like Cognitive behavioural therapy, while issues such as depression, substance abuse, or severe anxiety may require longer-term treatments.

How effective is treatment for sports performance problems?

Sports psychology has been shown to improve performance and help athletes manage their emotions. Sports psychology can be effective in boosting performance, team dynamics, and injury rehabilitation. Over the past decade, nearly every professional sports team in every major sport has added a sports psychologist to its staff. Many colleges have done the same, and even some high school programs have done the same. Olympic hopefuls may consult with sports psychologists starting in elementary school.

What are the limitations of sports psychology?

Sports psychology may have several limitations. Every athlete is unique and may respond differently to sports psychology treatments. Therapy can help an athlete reach their potential; it can help athletes cope with injury and pain, but it cannot change the physical limitations that may be affecting an athlete’s performance.
