John works with a variety of issues including: Anger, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), chemical health, child and adolescent behavioral challenges, conflict resolution, depression, grief and loss, life changes, relationships, and self improvement.
John is a therapist with 25 years experience as a mental health clinician serving adults, couples, children, adolescents and families. His training from the University of Iowa and Simmons College in Boston offers a strong theoretical grounding in psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral therapy. That is important, but more important is your experience as a client. Our work together will be built upon a helping relationship of trust and understanding. What would it look like? Identifying and solving specific problems; exploring aspects of your "self" and utilizing your strengths; making change that you set as a goal.

I have helped individuals find their way through depression, anxiety, trauma and grief, all while honoring the truth of their stories.
We all have our own stories to tell. Sometimes it can be hard to tell those stories. It's either too painful, we're worried what other may think, or we may think our stories are somehow wrong or not worth telling. Whether your story is filled with sadness, pain, fear, shame or loneliness you should be able to share your story and feel the validation of your uniqueness. You should also be able to see the joy hiding inside the struggle.

I work with families who have experienced a variety of traumas in my work at Children's Hospital in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Much of the that job involves counseling parents who have lost an infant or child, or who have a child with chronic health problems, or whose child has a life threatening condition. In addition, couples who try to have another child after a loss have specific needs. When interventions are available to address the trauma of child illness or death right away, we can sometimes reduce the severity of the struggles with their trauma.

Together, we can address: anxiety and stress, depression, trauma and dissociation, loss and grief, and family conflict.
My approach is focused on the solutions you want to achieve. When you work with me, we will articulate what it is you want and need to move forward, and then we will harvest the unique strengths you already have to get there. We will collaborate on changing the aspects of your behavior that are not working for you. My approach does not begin and end with problems or the past—we only make those inquiries in order to frame solutions for the present. My work draws from several theoretical frameworks, including CBT, Internal Family Systems, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, CPT, and EMDR to help you achieve your goals and aspirations

You can make the change you want. And I can help. I can assist you in transforming negative and destructive thoughts and behavior into more helpful and compassionate responses. I start with assessing your particular patterns that are self-defeating to what you would like to change in your life. Then I design a program to help you change these behaviors and cope with your existing situation. This mindfulness-based therapy emphasizes working together to help you with depression, anxiety, addictions, eating disorders, and chronic or emotional pain; resolve relationship issues; or recover from trauma and grief.

Proper resolution of weight loss problems often requires attention to the complexity of the individual.
Weight loss and body weight management are the primary subjects of my video-based counseling, where attention is focused on the psychological factors (e.g., stress, self-esteem, low mood, anxiety, work and family pressures, etc.) that contribute to, or interfere with, your success. After 35 years of providing general psychotherapy, my practice has now shifted to a subject I am passionate about: assisting and guiding those who wish to lose weight, and have found previous efforts to do so, unsuccessful. Our counseling will be covered by your insurance plan, because we will be working on issues related to your mental health.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
