I am trained to help those with a variety of life problems including; depression, anxiety, grief, loss and separation, self-esteem issues, family, parenting and/or relationship issues, physical and sexual abuse, anger management and substance use issues.
By combining a back-ground in nursing, psychology and social work, my goal is to help individuals achieve a greater sense of physical, emotional and spiritual well being. I provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals and couples who want to explore issues that may be contributing to their feelings of being stuck or dissatisfied with their way of being. I view the therapy process as a joint venture between myself and the client. I believe that every individual has the capacity to answer their own questions by drawing from their own inner wisdom.

I am focused on helping clients who are at a point in their life where they want and need a change. We will work together to help you identify what the underlying issues are, and how to best address them so that you can continue with life in the best way possible. I have experience working with clients who have suffered a life changing traumatic event such as combat, sexual abuse, physical abuse, sexual assault, and other traumatic events. Together, we can help you heal from these events in your life. They are a part of you, but do not need to define you.

I have clinical expertise in mood disorders, including anxiety and depression, trauma, including sexual assault, childhood abuse and neglect, relationship violence/domestic violence, military combat, substance use disorders and performance psychology.
As a counseling psychologist, the majority of my work is focused on helping individuals negotiate the emotional setbacks they encounter throughout their lives. Feeling disconnected from ourselves and others, individuals can easily become depressed, anxious, or feel broken. My work in individual therapy centers on helping my clients to reconnect to stronger parts of themselves. I utilize an integrative approach that combines the science of psychology with interpersonal warmth, acceptance and understanding.

I approach therapy with empathy, curiosity, and an open heart and mind. I meet people where they are and honor everyone as the experts of their own lives. I am here to provide support and encouragement for anyone who is ready to take the brave step of asking for help. Therapy can vulnerable, but it can also be collaborative, insightful, and a heart opening experience. My priority is to create an environment of safety and inclusivity. Working as a team, I can help individuals discover effective tools for how to trust their own bodies, regulate their nervous systems, and release old beliefs so they can reclaim a life worth living.

I know no one who is "accidentally" in counseling or therapy. Thus, this step and this choice is often quite difficult. I embrace building rapport with my clients in a way that allows us to engage in a collaboration of unique, innovative and effective techniques to overcome the challenges, problems and/or difficulties they are facing, whether in their social, personal, or business life. I take pride in listening to my clients and trying to provide them thoughtful tools they can use long after our sessions are complete.

Clients often decide to meet with a therapist when they have situations in their lives that they cannot seem to work through on their own. Many of them have tried talking to friends or relatives, but still feel stuck. I will help you look at problems in ways which will help you move in a direction that makes sense for you. I work closely with clients to help them resolve their concerns and problems in an environment which is confidential and nonjudgmental. Many of my clients say they begin to feel better after the first session.

Are you interested in how to use the connections between your mind, brain and body to improve your health, enrich your relationships, and increase your overall life? Working with these connections has been the focus of my 35 years of practice as a psychologist. Since every client's presenting concern in some way or another impacts upon their brain, their mind and their body - whether that involves depression, anxiety, pain, sleep, relationship challenges, or digestive concerns - my orientation to therapy is well positioned to help people get better now and to be better positioned to stay healthier in the future.

Are you contemplating therapy? Asking yourself if you really need it? The decision to participate in therapy is very personal and rarely straightforward. The majority of clients I work with are competent, well-functioning individuals who are struggling in some way or are feeling dissatisfied, unhappy, or stuck. Whether it's regarding a past experience, your everyday life, your relationship, fears about the future, or something more devastating or extraordinary, therapy can help.

People say you are a good person with a perfect life, yet you don't feel like it. People say it will work out, yet nothing changes. Some people even say you should wait it out, pray it off, or let it be, yet your heart is not letting you forget about it. In the end, you feel alone. You may feel afraid or ashamed to even talk about it with people close to you. You wonder if others will truly understand you and your situation. You struggle to open up because you do not want to be judged. And I get it.

If you are here, you may be an individual with complex trauma, or someone who is struggling with post traumatic stress. These symptoms can include depression, anxiety, dissociation, flashbacks, looping self critical thoughts, a deep feeling of abandonment, and challenges within relationships with loved ones. Whether you are an individual looking to work on your own healing, or the parent of a child or teen who is struggling, I may be a good fit for your therapy needs.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
