Everyone struggles with patterns, things we become "stuck" on. I work to help my clients identify what these are and what contributes to them. During this process, we work through the memories, thoughts, and behaviors that maintain these patterns. Many of our challenges st art from us trying to help ourselves, whether it be coping with something or problem-solving. So, addressing these reasons is essential to treatment, and I take a strength and values-based approach. With additional training in art therapy, we also may use expressive art techniques.

As the Art Therapy Program Director at Adler Graduate School, MN, I bring extensive knowledge and experience supporting clients to heal through art making regardless of experience or skill.
You have tried "talk therapy" and want to do something different, something creative. You seek joy and calm, meaning and purpose. A new stage in life has begun. Loss, grief, and trauma haunt you. You are navigating your identity as LGBTQAI+. As a child you were labeled gifted and talented or considered bright and exceptional. You are neurodiverse. Mental health issues derail your life. You are discouraged. If you identify with any or all of these statements - and possibly more not listed – I can help.

We believe emotional wellness matters (a lot), and that everyone has the right to make it a priority. Unfortunately, it’s not always that simple. So many questions can get in the way. Maybe you’ve even asked them yourself: Is this normal? Can talking to someone really help me? What is therapy all about, anyway? What would people say if they knew I was going? How do I find the right therapist? Will I be comfortable there? When will I find the time? Will my insurance pay for this? If this sounds like you, you’re not alone. And we can help. To learn more, visit www.sonderwellness.com

These symptoms can include depression, anxiety, dissociation, flashbacks, looping self critical thoughts, a deep feeling of abandonment, and challenges within relationships with loved ones. Whether you are an individual looking to work on your own healing, or the parent of a child or teen who is struggling, I may be a good fit for your therapy needs.

Waitlist for new clients
The most common feedback I get from clients is that they can tell that I love what I do. They are so right! I believe it is a strength, not a deficit, to reach out to someone for help and support. Whether it's acute trauma, behavioral issues, or adjustment to difficult life circumstances, being heard and supported in a therapeutic setting can make a world of difference. My approach with clients is to meet them where they are, determine where they want to be, and to be an empathic witness for them in their healing journey.

I've helped many clients work through difficult challenges they're facing and would like to help you too. I have a very straight forward, assertive and somewhat irreverent communication style. We work hard, bravely dig as deep as we need to and have some belly laughs along the way. My clients appreciate how real and raw it can get, they feel free to share the good, bad and the ugly. If you're ready to be a good student I am a good teacher = Let's roll up our sleeves?!

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
