Distress provides us an opportunity to examine the purposefulness of our cognitive, emotional, and relational patterns in a meaningful way. If we better understand what shaped us, where we are in the present, and what we want to integrate in the future, we can take fruitful action to instill change in our lives. Different approaches to our distress are at times necessary in order to reconcile new stages of development and new parts of our selves.

People begin seeing a therapist for many reasons--you may be experiencing overwhelming stress, feeling a sense of hopelessness or loss of meaning in your life, living with painful grief, coping with traumatic past or present events, suffering in relationships, or simply feeling "stuck." In our sessions together, you and I will explore your goals, wishes, feelings, and concerns, with the aim of moving toward natural wholeness within yourself and in your relationships with others, in an atmosphere of warmth, authenticity, and acceptance.

I have seen a number of therapists seeking therapy in recent years after providing LMFT and LP supervision for many years.
I have practiced for 39 years in Minnesota, seeing children, adults, couples and families. My practice currently is primarily with adults and couples (and adult teens) who are seeking a therapist who is collaborative, offers guidance and new perspectives, and believes the client is ultimately in charge of change. I value awareness, mindfulness and the process of living out a personal story that is based on strengths and hopefulness. Above all, I believe that if people feel respected and cared for they are capable of growth and moving through even the most difficult times.

I seek to understand my clients’ past, present, and future to collaborate with them on finding answers to questions and solutions to problems. My practice is rooted in mindfulness, unconditional acceptance, and intellectual curiosity. I believe that in order for positive change to occur in therapy (and most relationships), an individual must feel wholly seen, understood, and accepted by the other.

I primarily practice from an existential framework that places emphasis on navigating challenges inherent in the hu man experience, while working towards the goals of increased fulfillment and self-efficacy.
Like many things in life, in therapy the journey is every bit as important as the destination. An indispensable part of this journey is the relationship between client and therapist. My first priority in getting to know a new client is to work together to form an alliance that feels supportive, trusting, and empowering. In addition, I also strive to create an environment where it feels safe to say the quiet parts out loud, where you can fully express yourself without fear of judgment, and where you can begin to experience new patterns of interaction that enable you to increase satisfaction in your interpersonal relationships.

I've been a psychotherapist for over 40 years. What I have found is the most powerfull tool is the relationships I develop with my clients which are often deeply meaningful, based on understanding the depth of the person, often extending to the inclusion of spiritual experience. I am a fully trained marriage and family therapist, and I have graduated from the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Institute as a certified Psychoanalyst. The American Psychoanalytic Institute has awarded me the status of a Training and Supervising Analyst, the highest level of certification awarded. I want to help people find their own sense of truth.

I help couples using the Gott man method, a data-driven approach, to improve connection and conflict management.
Relationships require trust, communication, and profound awareness of each other’s worlds. I work with couples, including polyamorous, non-monogamous, kinky, etc, to build connection, trust, and intimacy in their relationships. I also help partners learn to manage relationship conflict more effectively. I help partners find ways to communicate about challenging and sensitive issues. This is important when partners struggle to connect around each other's unique sexual wants and needs. These conversations need an atmosphere of trust, acceptance, and non-judgment, as partners learn to validate and respond to each other's sexual selves.

Whether clients are looking for support and encouragement to maximize strengths or need assistance in dealing with a wide variety of psychological issues, effective therapy begins with the formation of a relationship. I place an emphasis on meeting patients where they are, which includes taking into account environmental factors, culture, ethnicity, and family/interpersonal history. Then, collaborating together to understand goals, assets, and challenges in order to create a plan to solve problems and increase understanding. By integrating various theoretical approaches and utilizing current research from psychology and neuroscience, my goal is to provide effective individualized treatment.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
