The shame of not being in control of your life can feel so isolating and anxiety provoking. And the thought of talking about it with someone else can feel paralyzing at times. How did I get here? Why can't I fix this on my own? Why do I keep going back? What is wrong with me? Do I have a drinking problem? Why can't I sleep? Do I need to quit or can I just cut back? Why is my relationship so difficult? These nagging thoughts could go on and on.

Sometimes you may find yourself experiencing conflicting emotions or in complex relationships. Therapy helps you find clarity and return to emotional wellness. I include family members in session when helpful and I explore with you ways to achieve enriching emotional and interpersonal experiences. I'm originally from Mexico and moved to MN in 1997, which allows me to provide therapy fluently in Spanish and/or English along with a personal understanding of Latino culture, American culture and multicultural relationships.

Therapy is different for everyone. I believe one of the most important aspects of successful work in therapy comes from the strength of the client/therapist relationship. The process of solving emotional and relational problems can be both intimidating, and very rewarding. I work to help individuals and couples discover their strengths and build on them. The process of change will be unique to each person, and I am honored to be on it with you.

Life is hard and often not fair at times. We seek therapy to feel heard, validated and find ways to move through our pain. I work with a broad range of individuals, couple's and families. My passion is helping those with relational issues, developmental trauma, substance use as well as eating disorders. I will work with individuals (13+). I love working with transplants as I understand the complexities of moving to another part of the country and not knowing the culture. My goal is to help you find yourself, that internal voice that tells you, "you are worthy, you are enough."

Therapy only works when there is strong trust, and I work to foster a space that honors clients knowledge, pacing, and personal needs. I strive to help clients make forward movement as therapy is not just a place to vent. My style is warm, candid, and when appropriate, fairly humorous (therapy is work, but can also be playful!). My own journey as a daughter, partner, and mother to a 16 and 12 year old informs my work; I get what it means to be messy and resilient. I work hard to create a space where clients feel free of judgment, while still gently challenging people to do things that may be uncomfortable.

People come into therapy because they want something to change in their lives--how they feel, how they relate to others, how they handle stress. I enjoy working with people who want to commit to working in therapy; who have the courage to face the important issues; who want to work collaboratively with me to find the solutions to feeling better. I consider myself a guide and coach in this process as we get to know each other. It gives me great joy to watch my clients grow, change and start to enjoy life again.

You might be unsure or nervous about starting therapy, but you know you need some help. The feelings are big and sometimes you can push it down and ignore it, but more and more it keeps showing up, demanding to be addressed. Relationships are confusing. You want to be close but it might not feel safe. You want to have closer relationships but also people often disappoint you. You might feel on a gut level like there is something wrong with you or you are bad or unworthy. Together, we can work on this. Together, it is possible to feel better.

**I am not taking new couples as this time.** Individual therapy is one of the best gifts that we can give ourselves. I tend to work with clients who want to move away from unhealthy habits, seek transformation and are actively working to create the life they desire. You may find that Individual therapy could also revamp your relationship(s) through the process of learning new self-care habits, reducing your anxiety, finding a healthier work/life balance, and exploring new parts of yourself that will foster increased self-esteem.

Life presents inevitable challenges. Problems are problems. People are not problems. I will work alongside you to be curious and draw out your innate knowing and expertise. You share in my belief in the power of metaphor and meaning-making as a healing medium. This may include creative processes with art materials or it can be through "talk therapy" as well. We will work as collaborators to achieve greater self-awareness that allows you to move forward with confidence, less fear, self judgement and criticism.

Humans often endure complicated transitions and unexpected challenges while learning to navigate the world. I especially enjoy working with people during dynamic times of life like middle school, high school, and college. I also specialize in work with creative individuals and artists. Clients are warmly accepted in my practice for who they are today. I help clients better understand their brain and their body's responses. My goal is to provide a stable environment that is both supportive and challenging. Together, we explore what that person values, where they want to go, what they would like to change, and who they want to become.

Relationships can be the most important things in our lives and they can also be our greatest struggles. Sex is another important topic-our own sexual selves as well as our sexual relationships with others. But we don't always have a lot of places to talk about these important issues. This is why I specialize in relationship and sex therapy. I am a Certified Sex Therapist through AASECT and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I also offer online classes for couples and individuals at classes.laurarademacher.com.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Keewaydin, Minneapolis?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
