Life can be wonderful, exciting and full of joy! However, sometimes the continued stress and challenges of today's world have made it difficult for individuals and couples to find time to be loving, compassionate, and kind to themselves and others. Clients often come to me feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted. They are looking for support as they re-engage in loving themselves and growing their capacity for self-compassion and care. Many individuals I see are hoping to relieve and manage symptoms of anxiety, depression, and apathy. I help guide clients as they reflect and identify areas for growth and change.

I can teach you techniques to help your energy day-to-day and offer you clinical guidance for symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Is happiness somewhere in the future? Maybe it feels like you’re stuck here, dealing with everything you’ve got to deal with, and no immediate end in sight. Anxiety and depression tag-team each other, and it feels like you’re either putting out fires, or cocooning from exhaustion. Believe it or not, it is possible to interrupt this cycle, and meeting with a qualified therapist is often the first step. I am an AASECT-certified sex therapist who specializes in helping people reclaim their mojo, so to speak. I have years of experience helping clients feel better about life and attain a deeper understanding of the human psyche.

I have extensive experience working with clients on a wide range of issues, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, sexual and relationship issues, medical and health concerns, trauma and abuse, stress management, work and career issues, child behavioral and developmental issues, parenting and family issues, grief and loss, psychotic disorders.
People come to therapy for many reasons. In the first few sessions, I want to get to know you--what you are struggling with, your hopes and fears for the future, what seems to be getting in the way, what strengths and assets you bring. Together, we arrive at a plan, identifying your goals, sources of distress, and how best to work toward symptom relief and greater satisfaction with life and relationships. My approach integrates several treatment modalities, including psychoanalytic/psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness-based therapies, life-span developmental approaches, attachment theory, family and couples therapy.

Are you a teenager or young adult struggling to find your path in life? Are you still figuring out who you are and what you want out of life? You are not alone. Adolescence is a time of incredible transition and identity formation, and can be stressful and confusing. Despite how challenging this time is and that fact that our frontal lobe has not fully developed, we are asked to make some of the most important decisions of our lives (academic, occupational, relational, vocational). Adolescence and young adults often struggle with anxiety, depression, past trauma, substance use, and identity formation.

I have worked with a variety of concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relational challenges, and co-occurring substance use concerns.
“Stuck.” This is a word that often comes up in therapy: feeling stuck with painful feelings, with past traumatic experiences, in unhealthy ways of coping, or in challenging relationship dynamics. When stuck with thoughts of the past or worries about the future, this gets in the way of living in the present. Especially as environments are often invalidating of emotional experiences, getting unstuck is about making room for what we've learned to avoid. Through a close and meaningful relationship, I am passionate about creating a safe environment in which we can get to the bottom of what is keeping you from the life you want to lead.

I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and co-creating an environment for you to share and explore your most authentic range of emotions, especially the ones you were taught to hide. I often work with trans and queer community and folks with marginalized relationship structures/embodiments. I use a contemporary relational psychoanalytic lens, and am informed by queer and post modern theory. My work primarily focuses on assisting folks exploring their self through the intersubjective experience in the therapy room and prioritizes working in depth with and through interpreting the unconscious.

Depression Therapists
What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
