Does anxiety, depression or moodiness interfere with your experience of joy? Are your beliefs about the world, people and yourself getting in the way of leading a more satisfying life? These are some of the questions I have helped clients work on in my twenty five plus years as a psychologist. I want to help you learn skills to better manage these issues and other important aspects of your life. Here are some of the techniques I offer in therapy: cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) modified for individuals, family systems theory, solution-focused therapy and spirituality.

When challenges interrupt life, making it difficult to manage, having a therapist/guide to help you regain your potential gets you where you want to be sooner with greater success. We live in a culture that often encourages us to “just tough it out”. We can begin to believe that asking for help means admitting failure, and we fall further into despair. The truth is the therapy process creates space and time for you to explore what is at the root of those challenges. We will work together to build a genuine therapy relationship that supports your journey toward improved functioning and life satisfaction.

SOMATIC therapy! What is it? Well, if thinking could rid you of your problems you would have been freed long ago because. It is time to identify the root issues, confront the pain and fear from the past so you can move forward. Somatic therapy allows you to think, feel and move through stuck issues. It is time to live out your values with integrity and have meaningful connections with yourself, your loved ones and your community. It's time to be done with unresolved trauma and move on to bigger and better things.

Welcome to Through the Woods Counseling! I am a feminist therapist licensed in the state of Minnesota to treat co-occurring disorders - that’s just a way of saying I’m trained in working with folks that struggle with more than one issue at a time. Think things like anxiety and alcohol abuse, trauma and depression, stress management and ADHD, and so on… I believe mental health diagnoses can be helpful in giving us a starting point for evidence based ways to improve our mental wellness, but they are also labels rooted in and created by classically oppressive systems, so diagnosis is not a primary focus of sessions.

Are you dealing with a lot of stress in your life? Are you often feeling overwhelmed? Do negative thoughts bug you down but you don't know how to get out of it? Is your energy gone, and you feel you barely can get things done in a day? Would you rather stay in bed and sleep the day away? Would you sometimes like to have an on or off switch for feelings or your thoughts? Do you feel no purpose and lost some hope? Does anxiety sometimes take over and hinder you to do the things you would like to do? Are you struggling in relationships with others? Do you feel lonely? Does your past keep you from moving forward?

Anger Management Therapists
How long does therapy take for anger management?
Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.
How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?
Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.
Is there medication for anger management?
Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.
What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
