Psychodynamic Therapists in Hopkins, MN
I typically integrate several treatment modalities including: psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and an integrated health approach including, but not limited to, mindfulness based therapies.
Whether you are entering therapy with a clear vision of what you are looking for or are more uncertain of your goals, I will work with you to come up with strategies for growth and the development of optimal emotional health and functioning. I believe that healing occurs through the process of building a trusting therapeutic relationship. By creating a safe and confidential environment I will help you to better understand patterns (which are often outside of your awareness) that lead to emotional distress. Recognition of these patterns empowers you to make choices that can lead to life long change.

I often utilize psychodynamic-Adlerian, Existential, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills with a culturally sensitive lens.
I believe personal agency is key to finding meaning in distressing scenarios and growing from them. I use both Existential and solution-oriented approaches when engaging with clients and provide individuals, couples, and families with tools for self-awareness and self-empowerment through a mixture of theoretical models tailored to the client’s strengths and needs. I work to help clients establish more adaptive patterns of thinking with humor, empathy, and respect. While I will explore root causes of issues, I emphasize the importance of personal growth and identifying personal strengths.

You struggle in your relationship, or your doctor handed you a terrible diagnosis. Maybe there is something important you need to talk about, but you don't know who you can trust. On some days, it may feel your mind is spiraling out of control. Getting out of bed may have become so much more difficult lately. You experience dread too much of the time. You feel alone and sometimes wonder "what is the point?" You can't seem to get around to doing what needs to get done. People are constantly on your case. You seem to be your own worst enemy. You don't want your friends or partner to know this one bad thing about you.

One goal together in therapy is to raise your awareness about why you do what you do. As we become more conscious we can make better choices and we function better in our lives. I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and have practiced for the past 5 years. Most of my clients struggle with anxiety, depression, or where they are in their lives. I believe our adult behaviors are guided by things we can be unconscious about.

Looking for a therapist can be hard, frustrating, and reinforce our depression or anxiety at times when we are seeing countless profiles and pictures of people that we think may not understand what is going on in addition to what we are experiencing. The profiles we do have the courage to click on may reduce our fears a little yet the therapist may still not sound human or states a fun fact that does not share much about their life. I understand the struggles with depression, anxiety, grief and/or trauma first hand. I would love to help you be seen and heard through our sessions and in your life.

If you are reading this, you're probably experiencing significant pain. Perhaps you're facing a break-up, or you realize your new partner is very much like the previous one. You may be scared, uncertain of the next step. Perhaps you are single, asking what it might take to find the right partner, or you may feel stuck in your marriage. You'll come in, plop yourself down, and ask me to fix you. I'll say: "I cannot do that." "All right," you say, "then, what is the point?" I'll respond: "I can help you be curious."

Psychotherapy is simply a conversation designed to help you understand yourself more completely. Rather than providing answers, it helps you identify what is interfering with your ability to live in a satisfying way. I have helped people sufferring from depression, anxiety, and relationship problems - even when previous attempts at treatment have failed. Meaningful change is possible in an environment of mutual respect and safety, where you can tell your own story at your own pace. I work with both individuals and couples.

People say you are a good person with a perfect life, yet you don't feel like it. People say it will work out, yet nothing changes. Some people even say you should wait it out, pray it off, or let it be, yet your heart is not letting you forget about it. In the end, you feel alone. You may feel afraid or ashamed to even talk about it with people close to you. You wonder if others will truly understand you and your situation. You struggle to open up because you do not want to be judged. And I get it.

For adolescents and adults in the midst of transition, loss or difficulty, finding real help can seem like a dicey proposition. Often people find themselves depressed, anxious, numb or lost, but might feel too ashamed to let others know the extent of their growing unhappiness. Many try to manage their worry in secret, only transmitting their distress after their work/school performance slips, they self-harm or start to abuse chemicals. Family and friends may actively worry about them, but not know how to start the conversation or how to get their loved one help.

Some people find themselves feeling stuck with certain thoughts and feelings. Others find themselves repeating behaviors that lead to unproductive and problematic situations in their life. Therapy is a process where these concerns can be discussed and worked through from a nonjudgmental standpoint. My therapeutic approach is to assist you in reaching your personal or relationship goals with more effective ways of being. The adolescents and adults I work with are understood as individuals that have their own unique attitudes, beliefs, and experiences.

Often a question asked prior to counseling is, am I thriving or simply surviving? Individuals question their life path and need help to figure out where to start exploring. We work together to identify strengths, areas of growth, and both are used to help cultivate a fulfilling life experience. Clients may feel there is a mismatch between their head and hearts so we also work to connect them which in-turn causes less uncertainty and confusion in life choices.

While we are capable of managing a lot, sometimes we may feel too sad, too scared, too tired, or too lonely. This can make having a relationship, family, school, work, or just living that much more overwhelming. Life is also full of surprises and you might be going through changes that feel too daunting or even devastating. You might have struggled for a long time or just recently. Despite your best effort, you still feel quite stuck, helpless, confused, or frustrated. You might even know what you need or want to do differently, but not so sure about where or how to start. This is a great start and I am so glad we found each other.

Hi! I'm Meg (they/she). I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) licensed in Minnesota. As a queer, non-binary, and neurodivergent human, I care deeply about providing affirming care to the LGBTQIA+ community and neurodiverse folx. I enjoy working with adolescents, adults, students, teachers, athletes, those new to therapy, adults exploring their neurodiversity later in life, and people who have felt "stuck" with therapy in the past. I click especially well with creatives, ADHDers, and intellectualizers hoping to feel more! I am a trauma therapist and use Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for trauma processing.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
