My experience working with a diverse population of families, couples and individuals of all ages has led me to adopt and practice with a relational, client-centered and strengths-based approach. This follows my observations that individuals have internalized resources, wisdom and capacity for resilience that are often unrecognized or repressed. Strengthening those parts of the self provide the most enduring and transformative healing experiences. I also believe a critical component of my work with clients is helping them understand the brain/body connection, and how to utilize this understanding to manage symptoms and responses.

My approach to therapy is rooted in empathy, compassion, dedication and authenticity. I strive to create a safe, supportive and trusting environment where my clients will feel comfortable, heard and understood; while exploring their thoughts, feelings, and most "raw" aspects of themselves. I meet each individual where they are and walk beside them on their journey to meet their personal goal(s) to ensure they do not feel alone. I believe the individual leads the sessions, determines what they want and need from each session and goal creation. It is a team effort, but one I am here to support and engage others/team if wanted/needed.

Accepting new clients: in-person & virtual. Did you wake up again today with that nagging feeling in the pit of your stomach, that reminder that something is "off"? Do you feel dread, sadness, fear, anxious, overwhelmed, or some variation of all? Whether you're coming apart at the seams and everyone is noticing, or quietly pretending, both are exhausting. Perhaps you know the cause or not, but the fact is, you're stuck. I get it because I've been there too and I know it's daunting, dark, and heavy. The good news is that it gets better and you don't have to face it alone. Let me be your gentle guide and helping hand along the way.

I have experience - and enjoy working with - individuals with anxiety, worry, physical symptoms of anxiety (e.g., panic attacks), obsessive-compulsive tendencies, and related concerns who recognize the impact these symptoms have on their life and are ready to try something new. I use our first session to understand what brought you to therapy, and I use science to create your treatment plan.

Aurora recognizes the important roles that relationships, experiences, and beliefs play in our daily lives. Our family and childhood influence our personal development; however, they are not the only determinants of who we become. We are not static beings but live in a state of constant flux, continuing to grow and having the capacity to choose change. Sometimes, changes may feel unwanted, scary or overwhelming. We may struggle in adjusting to them, or feel stuck in old patterns of responding that no longer work for us. Aurora adopts a client-centered approach and values all aspects of a person's physical, mental, and social world.

Relational Therapists
How does relational therapy work?
Relational therapy was developed by psychologist Jean Miller, whose ideas stressed that having strong connections with others encourages better health and well-being when compared with a lonely existence. Conversely, poor interpersonal relationships do not foster growth and learning. Relational therapy also encourages trust in others and patience with others, along with better communication and less conflict.
Is relational therapy evidence-based?
Relational therapy is not well-studied, and it may not be as effective in treating certain mental health conditions when compared with evidence-based treatments like cognitive behavioral or acceptance and commitment therapy. However, relational therapy uses techniques found in cognitive behavioral therapy as well as psychodynamic therapy, which are both well-studied with empirical research.
How long are people typically in relational therapy?
Clients may see improvement after a few weeks or months of therapy. Like cognitive behavioral therapy, relational therapy can reduce symptoms within 10 to 20 weeks, at 45 to 50 minutes once a week. But like any type of therapy, improvement depends on the person and the severity of the problem.
Does relational therapy work?
While no therapy type will work for everyone, some evidence suggests that this therapy can be effective. Relational therapy can help a person manage problematic relationships as well as the mental health conditions that accompany difficult relationships like depression or anxiety. This therapy type may offer benefits that are hard to measure but can be just as valuable—including feelings of higher self-worth or healthier connections with others.
