My approach is inspired from psychodynamic therapy, family systems, gestalt, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Helping you heal and reach your full potential is both a blessing and a privilege. Offering you a healing process filled with compassion, authenticity, warmth, and a non judgmental attitude is my priority. My offering: A healing process that helps you to discover and understand how unresolved painful experiences from the past keep impacting your present thoughts, needs, feelings and behaviors. Developing skills to become aware of these, will allow you to have a more loving relationship with ALL the parts of yourself. As a result, more meaningful relationships and deeper connections with others will follow.

My approach to therapy is methodologically integrative, combining the latest advancements in training and professional development within a psychodynamic framework.
My experience has reinforced a fundamental belief: you are the expert on yourself. In sessions, you can expect a space where your investment in yourself is honored with active and thoughtful engagement. We’ll address the root causes of concerns like burnout, depression, anger, anxiety, relationship concerns, compulsions, or disordered eating. Often, these issues are linked to factors like high expectations, self-worth, emptiness, trauma, or an unformed identity - so that's where we will spend time. Although these topics can be tough, I also think it's important to be conversational, connect as people, and laugh.

Jenni McBride McNamara, LMFT: Have you ever thought, "My ex or spouse or partner or parent or friend is driving me crazy! I can't handle this anymore!"? If so, you've come to the right place. Dealing with high-conflict personalities can be exhausting, depressing, and worrisome, but seeing a therapist with experience can make a huge difference. A therapeutic relationship with someone who understands can be the catalyst for positive, sometimes unanticipated, change. You don't have to be stuck, endure, or suffer forever. You can find your inspired self and be free of the stress of a high conflict relationship.

Does it feel like your inner critic has been getting its way for far too long? It’s always berating you, saying: “Nothing you do is ever good enough, of course they’re never pleased with you”... “There isn’t even much going on right now, why are you so overwhelmed?”... “You knew waiting until the last second would suck, why do you have to waste so much time making everything perfect?”... Intuitively, you know the Critic is separate from who you are, but it gets so loud and persistent sometimes that your self-esteem can’t help but take a hit. You’ve succumbed to feeling guilty, anxious, and small, & don’t know how to feel better.

Immediate availability! My approach to therapy is warm and interactive. You’ll find me using humor a lot; just because therapy is hard work doesn’t mean it can’t be fun! I enjoy getting to know people on a deep level and helping uncover unconscious patterns holding them back. I'm all about getting to the root of a problem, and I will always be honest and direct with you. I offer a holistic approach to therapy and help people gain insight on the developmental experiences that shaped their current belief systems. To me, the biggest compliment is when clients enjoy coming to therapy and feel empowered to heal.

Do you want to get to know yourself better? Therapy is a powerful tool in helping you do just that. In our work, I'll create a safe and nurturing space in which we can reduce your symptoms and achieve insight. Through our talk we'll uncover negative patterns. These patterns appear in our personal relationships or professional lives, and often in both. Often they appear most prominently when a life change happens. By understanding these unhelpful patterns, we can then address them so that you can lead a more meaningful and fulfilling life - and get "unstuck!" I work with many who identify as LGBTQ+ and am an ally.

Do you look at your partner and get the sense you're "just roommates"? Is your gut telling you he's not "just friends" with that co-worker? Has your sex life lost its luster? So many people struggle in their relationships, and it's so sad, because there IS something you can do. Yes, it's scary to ask for help, and you might not want others to know things aren't going well. But doing nothing only means the problems will get bigger. Instead of ignoring the problems until they're too big to fix, get help now.

Through connections we learn about ourselves, others and our world. Sometimes, safe connections and acceptance have been missing in our lives due to neurodivergence, social rejection, abuse or neglect. We may walk through life feeling like outsiders struggling to understand the world and ourselves. In therapy, I work to provide a safe, nurturing place where you can take off your mask and find self compassion, acceptance and healing. I offer trauma informed therapy with collaborative, nonjudgmental support to explore your strengths and manage life's challenges. I use humor, empathy and multiple evidence-based therapy models.

Aurora recognizes the important roles that relationships, experiences, and beliefs play in our daily lives. Our family and childhood influence our personal development; however, they are not the only determinants of who we become. We are not static beings but live in a state of constant flux, continuing to grow and having the capacity to choose change. Sometimes, changes may feel unwanted, scary or overwhelming. We may struggle in adjusting to them, or feel stuck in old patterns of responding that no longer work for us. Aurora adopts a client-centered approach and values all aspects of a person's physical, mental, and social world.

My experience working with a diverse population of families, couples and individuals of all ages has led me to adopt and practice with a relational, client-centered and strengths-based approach. This follows my observations that individuals have internalized resources, wisdom and capacity for resilience that are often unrecognized or repressed. Strengthening those parts of the self provide the most enduring and transformative healing experiences. I also believe a critical component of my work with clients is helping them understand the brain/body connection, and how to utilize this understanding to manage symptoms and responses.

I specialize in working with clients who have experienced narcissistic abuse. As an adult child of a narcissist myself, I know all too well how difficult it is to get help and to heal. Narcissism isn't necessarily overt abuse, especially for children, and it is often hard to figure out why you feel depressed, anxious, struggle with perfectionism, or keep finding yourself in codependent relationships as adults. Narcissistic abuse is trauma and it can keep you in survival mode for a very long time. As trauma therapist, I would love to help you learn to thrive, to find joy, to be free, and really live your own life. We do heal!

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
