I can help by having personal and professional experience in my specialty areas, such as Autism, foster/kinship care, and FASD.
My approach to therapy is rooted in empathy, compassion, dedication and authenticity. I strive to create a safe, supportive and trusting environment where my clients will feel comfortable, heard and understood; while exploring their thoughts, feelings, and most "raw" aspects of themselves. I meet each individual where they are and walk beside them on their journey to meet their personal goal(s) to ensure they do not feel alone. I believe the individual leads the sessions, determines what they want and need from each session and goal creation. It is a team effort, but one I am here to support and engage others/team if wanted/needed.

I believe in a strengths-based approach and collaboration in the therapeutic process. It is important for me to learn about the person as a whole, and their place in their environment. I believe every individual is unique and may require a variety of modalities to determine what fits best. My overarching framework is to provide neurodiversity affirming care and find paths to work with your strengths instead of against them.

Hi! Jes here! If we were sitting down in person (or through a screen), the first thing I would likely ask you, is if you wanted a water or hot cocoa and if you were interested in a snack - being comfortable in my space and with me are most important. The next thing I would likely ask you (or your parents) is if there is anything specific on your mind for our session. I want to always make sure I am meeting you where you’re at for each session. Following that, we would jump into our session using different treatment modalities.

My ideal client might be afraid to begin with. They may think I will tell them they are crazy, or look at them in shock for what they tell me. When I reassure them their trauma has taken a toll, but they are not crazy, and I can help them, they will relax. They will learn to trust me and open up. By opening up about their lives and what they have been through and working through their trauma, they will come out on the other side realizing they no longer need to experience the pain, and can experience the joy they always strived for.

I am currently accepting new clients, in person and online! Realizing that help is needed and reaching out can be difficult. I hope to make this process easier. As a primary therapist at CBT Minneapolis-St Paul, I focus on teaching good thinking habits and using cognitive behavioral tools to help adults and adolescents on issues like depression, anxiety, trauma, and grief/loss. I also enjoy working with people that are dealing with life transitions, have relationship concerns, LGBTQIA+ issues, parents who are struggling with their children, mothers dealing with postpartum mood issues, and individuals who are experiencing tinnitus.

As an openly polyamorous-queer-gender expansive person, I’ve spent most of my life experiencing microaggressions & unlearning the cisnormative & hetronormative messages that constantly tell us we are defective, broken, or unwanted. They are wrong! We are fabulous, vibrant & deserving, of all the gifts the world has to offer. I became a therapist to share what I’ve learned, bring healing, & advocate for queer/trans youth, young adults & their families while working for social justice & full inclusion into society. Our work will be in a safe, affirming space so we can collaborate to create & implement a road map to your recovery.

I find that people can be in all sorts of stages in their lives and readiness to change. What matters more is the willingness to explore, be curious, and most likely ask some difficult questions. One of my greatest strengths is my ability to connect with people with all different kinds of life experiences. I tend to relate with those who identify as neurodivergent, or feel "other" in some way. My approach is very non-judgmental, and I do well with those who live "alternative" lifestyles, such as polyamory, ethical monogamy, kink/BDSM, and/or sex workers. I've been a therapist for a long time and no one has scared me away yet!

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
