There are several good reasons to find a therapist. Oftentimes, people seek assistance and support during times of transitions, a crisis, or because they've become stuck or confused about how their life is progressing. Common feelings during these times are often expressed through a increase in anxiety, developing depression, or a combination or different symptoms that simply start to feel overwhelming. If this is the place you find yourself and if you are looking to make a positive change in your life then your are in the right frame of mind to benefit from therapy.

Some of my areas of interest include OCD, anxiety, and autism.
Now accepting new clients! My primary approach is integrative and tailored to the individual. I am passionate about using current evidence-based practices to treat a variety of concerns; including OCD, anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, low self-esteem. I draw from various theoretical approaches, but often use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with an emphasis on the behavioral components, including exposure response prevention (ERP) and behavioral activation. Other common approaches I utilize include mindfulness-based interventions, person-centered, trauma informed, and solution focused.

I have more than 20 years of experience working in the areas of depression, anxiety, self esteem, and grief and loss.
I understand how it can be difficult to reach out for help especially when you may be feeling sad, anxious, and overwhelmed. I understand that it is hard to trust someone and express your doubts and fears. Let me help you. I believe that life is too short to think of therapy as just hard work. Challenging? Yes. Laughter? Yes. Compassion? Yes. Therapy is about knowing that you want to reach the goal of feeling better about yourself, your relationships, your life.

Reaching out for help can be anxiety provoking for many but realize that it is also a sign of strength.
Loss, sadness, changes, and stress all part of the human experience but going through those these times can be very challenging and confusing. With the right tools and mindset, you can turn these difficult times into a chance to learn about yourself, grow, and come out even stronger than before.

Sharing our fears, hurt, and anger declutters our minds, allows for stillness within us, and gives us an opportunity to heal of secrets, guilt, and shame.
Are you feeling quarantined by the walls you build for protection? Has past hurt left you feeling inadequate, unworthy and wondering why you are crying for no reason? Have you recently been diagnosed with a chronic medical condition and are noticing that you're more worried, sad, increasingly negative and critical? You used to be joyful. Getting out of bed used to be easy. You were optimistic. Life wasn't a chore. However, now you dilute and downplay good news with doses of your versions of reality.

I take an inviting approach to counseling, and collaborate with my clients in their healing. I believe people to be resilient, and know that we all get “stuck” sometimes. I work with my clients to identify their strengths and resources to get “unstuck” and move toward thriving in their lives. I see individuals from all walks of life struggling with a variety of stressors from depression, traumatic experiences, life transitions, grief and loss, anxiety, burnout/resilience, relationship strain, to any other issue that could be a road block to living a fulfilling life.

I specialize in working with trauma, depression, anxiety, and co-occurring substance use issues, including training in trauma based therapy.
Dealing with overwhelming stress is terrible. How many times have you “not made the smart choice” to cope with anxiety, stress or sadness? How often do you say to yourself “I hate feelings”? Do you often think “what is wrong with me, I know that was a terrible idea. I don’t even know what I was thinking?”. Maybe you even wonder if you are beyond helping, or that you have no idea where to start. Well, you might not be able to change things happening in your life, but you can change how you adapt and view those stressors.

Life is a challenge and everyone handles it differently. People experience different challenges and sometimes need someone to assist them on the journey. That is where I come in, to walk beside you and make your journey the best it can be. One of the first areas people struggle in when dealing with life issues is their sleep. Unable to shut the mind down due to stress, anxiety or any other reason? Or feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, having nightmares? Everyone wants to find peace, to enjoy life and live it to its greatest potential.

You are only as happy as your unhappiest child. If your child's anxiety, ADHD, or disruptive behaviors are causing your family unnecessary stress, I can help. In working with me, you and your child will build skills and learn specific tools to manage these symptoms through a variety of techniques including mindfulness practices, cognitive-behavioral therapy, social thinking strategies, and/or Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). At this time, I am offering in-person sessions and teletherapy (e.g., HIPPA-compliant video conferencing) in North Dakota, and teletherapy exclusively to Massachusetts residents.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
