You try to talk about something important to you and somehow it becomes a fight. How can this person you love and built your life with feel like such a stranger sometimes? Does it have to be this hard? To others, it seems like you have the perfect life and relationship. They’d be surprised to know the truth. When one or both of your buttons are pushed, things go off the rails. You know you love each other deeply and both want a solid and healthy relationship – but when these conflicts happen, you feel so disconnected and hopeless that you question whether you’ll ever be able to truly resolve things and find a deep connection again.

You may find yourself in a season of life where internally/personally, relationally, or professionally things feel uncomfortable, overwhelming, confusing, or worrisome. You may identify as a person who is feeling burnt out, wearing too many hats, feeling undervalued and misunderstood, having decision fatigue, feeling perfectionist tendencies, self-critical, avoidant of conflict, experiencing fears, reminded of childhood wounds/hurt, experiencing a life transition, etc. In any case, whatever brings you to therapy, I would be honored to come alongside you in your life's journey. I help people who are stuck in painful cycles of conflict, who are ready to learn how to heal, break free and move forward. People who come to see me find that I have a keen ability to hear them from a deep-subconscious level; that I can help them become more self-aware and empowered into improving several areas of their life. More often than not, when I meet with people they feel like they have tried everything. That is why I don't believe in wasting peoples time, nor do I throw out unnecessary tools and tactics. This means that I am highly attentive to what realistically works best for you.

I believe for clients to have the most beneficial therapeutic experience, there must be a strong relationship between client and counselor. Because of this, I strive to create a therapeutic environment that is comfortable, non-judgmental, and empathetic. I collaborate with clients to identify their strengths and resources, as well as the obstacles that can get in the way of change. I work together with clients to identify, learn and practice the tools necessary for change to occur.

Does anxiety, depression or moodiness interfere with your experience of joy? Are your beliefs about the world, people and yourself getting in the way of leading a more satisfying life? These are some of the questions I have helped clients work on in my twenty five plus years as a psychologist. I want to help you learn skills to better manage these issues and other important aspects of your life. Here are some of the techniques I offer in therapy: cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) modified for individuals, family systems theory, solution-focused therapy and spirituality.

We are all trying to live a life that has meaning and worth. When our best efforts don't work, we may become "stuck". This is where a counselor can help you interpret and re-frame the issues to chart a path to help get "UNstuck". My goal in therapy is to create a safe place to talk about the issues and work towards a solution. Maya Angelou says it best: "You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. If you cannot make a change, change the way you have been thinking. You might find a new solution."

If you are looking for a therapist who is present, genuine, and offers a caring and therapeutic space, then we might be a match. I love working with clients who are brand new to therapy and might feel a bit nervous. And clients who have been in therapy previously and may already know what they want out of the experience. Wherever you are on your journey, my mission is to meet you right where you are and walk alongside you to achieve the goals and dreams you have, or perhaps work to develop them altogether. I am also trained in Brainspotting which can be especially powerful for clients with a history of trauma.

Clients I work with are often not very willing to open up about themselves and are at times uninterested in therapy. Some would like to change but do not want to have to talk with someone to accomplish change, others have tried before and never been able to form a good relationship with a therapist. My clients often have a high resting level of anger and likely have had issues in life with anger or are described as difficult by others.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
