I use EMDR and integrative-psychodynamic therapy, with a focus on treating trauma. Currently, I am accepting clients for my two therapy groups (i.e., female trauma survivors, combat veterans; see below). I also am accepting therapists as clients as well as for supervision. I have found that my broad, philosophy-informed approach and experience as supervisor have made a "therapist's therapist," if that makes sense. Reach out, let's chat, and see if I'm right for you.

I’m Eric Murtha, an integrative psychotherapist, licensed to practice in Minnesota. During my years in practice, I have developed an understanding and appreciation of the uniqueness of each individual and family that I have helped. I believe that we all develop patterns regarding how we think, deal with emotions, and relate to the people in our lives. Often these patterns have served us in the past. However, during times of stress, loss, or traumatic experience, these patterns may be unhelpful, and we can feel stuck. This is when therapy can make a big difference in feeling better and help us live more effectively.

As a counseling psychologist, the majority of my work is focused on helping individuals negotiate the emotional setbacks they encounter throughout their lives. Feeling disconnected from ourselves and others, individuals can easily become depressed, anxious, or feel broken. My work in individual therapy centers on helping my clients to reconnect to stronger parts of themselves. I utilize an integrative approach that combines the science of psychology with interpersonal warmth, acceptance and understanding.

Congratulations on getting this far on your journey. I am going to entertain the idea that you are interested in changing aspects of yourself or your life so that you can move towards a personal goal, life satisfaction or general happiness. You have a child or teen you are worried about. We will work as a team and not keep anyone in therapy any longer than is necessary for the goal(s) to be realized. Please be advised that I expect challenging questions and hard work AND want you to want the same.

People seeking counseling may be troubled by 'external' challenges such as having to deal with difficult people or contend with serious financial issues. Or, problems may lie within the self--you may be stuck in patterns of feeling or behavior that sabotage your pursuit of happiness. Mostly, those entering counseling face both kinds of challenges. If you were to work with me, we would clearly identify and prioritize problems, choose appropriate strategies, and take action to resolve problems. We'll usually work extensively on thoughts and feelings before easing into behavior change.

Integrative Therapists

What is integrative therapy?

Integrative therapy is a type of therapy that combines ideas and techniques from different therapeutic approaches depending on the needs of the individual client. By merging elements of different treatments, an integrative therapist aims to offer a more flexible approach than those who practice just one type of therapy.

How does integrative therapy work?

Integrative therapy approaches a client’s mental, physical, and emotional health in a holistic way to discover the sources of their unhealthy behavior patterns or other challenges and considers the approach most likely to lead to improvement. Among the techniques an integrative therapist may practice are cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, EMDR, mindfulness, art or music therapy, psychodynamic therapy, breathwork, family systems therapy, gestalt therapy, and trauma-informed therapy. An integrative therapist regularly evaluates the client’s progress and is prepared to pivot to a different approach if progress stalls.

How long does integrative therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for integrative therapy; people who find they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that spurred them to seek treatment. New patients should understand that it may take some time for a therapist to land on a treatment approach that best meets their needs, but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

How effective is integrative therapy?

There are hundreds of types of talk therapy, and research shows that while they vary in form, goals, and frequency, many if not all can produce similarly successful outcomes. But a single approach does not always deliver the greatest, or speediest, benefit, and so even therapists primarily trained in one model will use tools, language, techniques, or exercises from others to shape an effective treatment plan.
