Are you aware of your patterns and struggling to change them? Do you often feel overwhelmed? Have difficulties saying no? We may look at different areas of your life: career, family, grief/loss, life purpose, relationships, spirituality, trauma recovery and more. Together we will explore habits, beliefs and blocks, which contribute to stress as well as interfere with feeling fulfillment, satisfaction and joy. With a holistic approach, I support learning how every emotion is trying to help you in some way. For example, you might often feel anxious and frustrated, then learn to better represent your needs, set boundaries and more.

I have been seeing patients for over 19 years and my experience has shown me time and again the wonderful changes that individuals can attain when they become more aware of the hidden meanings behind seemingly incomprehensible and self-destructive behaviors. When one takes the time to try to understand these behaviors instead of simply judging them negatively, it is often the case that maladaptive behavior patterns are discovered to be attempts persisting from the past at finding the best solution to a difficult situation.

Hello! I attained my doctorate at Johns Hopkins University in Entrepreneurial Leadership, and completed my master's degree in Mental Health Counseling from NYU. Through a solution-focused approach, we'll establish goals that are measurable and achievable. To me, therapy is a safe space to be vulnerable and intentional with what you hope to accomplish. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, and there is no room for judgement in this process. Therapy is an opportunity for you to raise awareness about yourself, your relationship with others, and your view of the world.

Our worlds on the inside and outside can be overwhelming, leaving us with intense emotion that is difficult to manage, understand and process. Perhaps you are left feeling worried, paralyzed, over-thinking decisions, or losing motivation? I work with patients to treat depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting challenges, as well as questions surrounding identity (racial, sexual, gender), and transitions through life-stages. I help patients face and process highly painful experiences, in an environment of safety that I strive to create and maintain throughout the therapeutic process.

I have two specialties - Helping couples to improve their relationships and helping people to change. With couples, I start with the belief that caring about each other doesn't always mean understanding each other and that many of us have never learned how to handle conflict effectively in a relationship. For those trying to change, I start with the assumption that we've usually already changed anything that's easy to change and that there are probably obstacles (often ones we are not aware of) to changing things we struggle more with - whether at work, outside of work or both.

Are you feeling burnt out and exhausted from all the demands and stresses in your life? It’s hard to feel good when you’re feeling depleted and overwhelmed. Life doesn’t have an easy mode for most of us. Stress, trauma, and loss can make it hard to stay on top of our responsibilities and manage problems like anxiety, and depression. Despite the challenges that have gotten you down lately, you don’t have to be stuck here. You can heal all parts of you and reclaim your sense of wholeness and worthiness.

If you have trouble meeting a life-partner, we should talk. Simlarly, if you have an issue with anxiety, let's discuss it. Life experience and training have given me some insight into backgrounds in religion, and ethnic minorities. I'm multilingual, but the main thing is to understand you. I've had almost 35 years of experience in learning how to do that.

My ideal clients are young women struggling with relationships, self esteem, and body image. If they grew up in a manipulative, abusive, or enmeshed environment, they might find themselves taking on perfectionistic or caretaking behaviors. They might also be experiencing a “quarter life crisis,” exploring a new career path, or unpacking how family dynamics have impacted them. My vision is for clients to put themselves first, live by their values, and understand their needs. In our work together, we’ll get clear on how your past has influenced your present so you can build a life that aligns with what’s most important to you.

I am a compassionate and involved listener, here to help sort things out together. Even those who are highly functioning may at times need to sit down with another person who has a fresh perspective in order to unpack frustrating challenges. Sometimes, in spite of our innate resilience, strength, and wisdom, life deals us stress or distress we can’t master on our own. My mantra is that talking helps, and two heads are better than one! My treatment approach sets the stage for you to understand your situation better, to like yourself and be yourself, get some relief, and achieve your goals.

As a first or second generation BIPOC person, do you feel like you are stuck between family expectations, your own dreams, and your own needs? As someone who may be defined as “other” are you having to constantly code switch or suppress who you really are to move between different contexts? Do you feel like you are constantly over giving to the point of not having time or resources to yourself? All of this can easily make you feel depressed, anxious, drained in your relationships, and unfulfilled.

My goal is to create a safe setting where together we can develop coping skills (a tool box) so you can have agency. I am easy to talk to warm and experienced. I enjoy my work (25 years) of helping clients cope with challenges. Often life's challenges deny you of fulfillment causing anxiety and sadness and stagnation. I want clients to achieve their goals and not be bogged down by untoward feelings, thoughts and experiences. We work together.

I believe that the work of therapy happens in a safe, non-judgmental setting which enables you to build a trusting relationship where you can share your deepest concerns, build resilience and develop insight which will enable you to develop more effective strategies and solutions in order to create and sustain a healthy more authentic and fulfilling life. If you find yourself repeating patterns of thoughts and behaviors that are not working for you or in relationships that don't work out and leave you wondering why, therapy can help. Sometimes, therapy is about focusing on a specific issue however often it is more encompassing.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
