I have been in private clinical practice for 22 years. I have specifically trained to work with children, adolescents, young adults and older adults. My time is spent fairly equally working with mental health and substance abuse issues. Likewise, I have chosen to not focus on one specific age group, finding it to be more satisfying to see various aged people. I spend the most time with young adults, from ages of 16-26. I enjoy working with couples; though challenging, I can often offer a safe place for them to listen to one another.

Additional areas of expertise: Anxiety disorders, eating disorders, OCD, emotional impact of acute or chronic health issues, academic concerns/pressure of students, faculty or staff; depression, stress, grief and loss.
People are sometimes challenged by turbulent emotions, transitions, losses or chronic mood issues. The day to day experience of emotional distress or an underlying sense of uneasiness affect vitality and are difficult to endure over time. Verbal dialogue within a relationship designed for you to freely express yourself, explore feelings and discover unconscious factors impacting you describes the change process of psychotherapy. I have seen many individuals over the years not only have symptom relief but find new paths while shedding patterns of disabling emotions, thoughts and behavior.

Often family history and life experiences have taught us unhealthy skills of dealing with the painful events in our lives. You may have found yourself in place where you are reacting in ways you never thought you would and not living the life you want. It's common to not even know why you are feeling the way you do. Exhaustion, frustration, anger and being easily overwhelmed are just a few common indicators there is something going on with your emotional self. If you are struggling know there is a different way.

Sometimes we get caught up in the messiness of life and forget to enjoy it! I get it, life can be stressful. All of our feelings are normal but sometimes we feel them more intense and they might even make our day to day lives extra challenging (anxiety, depression, low self-esteem… sound familiar?) You are deserving of a life you enjoy living and I am here to help you get back to your best, authentic self.

Congratulations! You've taken the first step toward feeling better by reaching out for support. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 26 years of experience. I have successfully helped clients with such issues as stress and anxiety, family conflicts, self esteem, & depression. My style of therapy is very upfront, as I have found that being direct with clients (and them being direct as well) has been the most effective way to progress through challenges. At the same time, I work hard to treat everyone with respect and compassion. I also love to laugh, and utilize humor as part of my therapy regularly.

How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
