I have several years of experience working with mental and behavioral health. I have helped individuals and couples recover from trauma related to physical, sexual, verbal, and emotional abuse. Trauma can manifest itself in several ways, including relationship and professional issues, allowing the inability to live in peace and harmony. It can also manifest body image, self-sabotage, and a lack of self-confidence. I use Brain Spotting (BSP), Collaborative, and Structural Therapy. Life, financial and other coaching is available from Ramona R Durso, EdD., MBA.

As a child counselor, it's important to create a safe and welcoming environment for young clients. Building trust and rapport is crucial in helping them feel comfortable discussing their thoughts and feelings. It's also important to utilize age-appropriate therapeutic techniques and activities that can help children understand and express their emotions in a healthy way. Understanding developmental stages and being sensitive to cultural and family dynamics are also key aspects of my approach when working with families, teens, and children.

My areas of focus are stress, anxiety, grief and loss, veterans, parents of teens and younger (we have raised 5 and fostered), teens 15 and up, women with intimacy/sexuality concerns (drive, guilt, shame, no desire) and those looking for life coaching. If this meets your need and you are looking for a counselor/coach who is down to earth, fun and not very conventional, you are in the right place. Check out my short video to see if I seem right for you.

I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and Motivational Therapy in my practice to help people meet their life goals and feel better about themselves.
I feel that everyone can be happy and live a peaceful life, given the right tools and guidance. We live in a chaotic and fast pace world and sometimes it can make our minds move in a negative direction. Not dealing with our issues can make us lose touch with who we are. Focusing on individual goals and moving forward is an important step in discovering the person you want to be. Doing this requires us to explore the person you once were, the person you are now and what you feel may be holding you back from becoming the person you want to be.

For 20+ years I have trained and practiced mindfulness and other meditative/insight techniques which I find to be simple and effective tools for building resiliency and compassion.
Counseling is an opportunity to explore the beautiful, but often messy experience of being human. Suffering is an unavoidable part of life, made much harder by the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. We are bombarded on all sides with messages that we are somehow less than. It is my sincere desire to create a safe space where you are genuinely accepted. A space where you can explore what you would like to change and discover new possibilities.

"Learning, Healing, Growing" is my goal for your journey in life. I work from a Cognitive Behavorial Therapy system and take a mindfulness approach. I believe that our daily activities are based on our thinking processes. I like to teach hollistic approaches to dealing with life issues (deep breathing, mindfulness, meditation, etc.) and incorporating positive thinking into sessions. This works with many life issues: depression, stress/anxiety, emotional issues, grief, relationship issues, etc. I have experience with couples, helping to find communication errors and helping to relieve some of the issues that cause the space between two people grow larger.

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
