At times, we all face the ups and downs of living that threaten to overwhelm us emotionally, confound, confuse, or cause us to feel like we've lost our footing in life. In these times we all need a helping hand, someone to listen with an open heart and an open mind without judgement or bias. Weather it's adjusting to change, getting unstuck, trying to finally see clearly, communicate and relate more effectively with others, or resolve past trauma, there's hope and there's help waiting to meet you right where you are at.

James spent ten years providing outpatient services where he observed that mental illness and chemical dependence issues, otherwise known as “co-occurring disorders” were low priority. Agencies seldom have time and resources to focus on one or the other, let alone “both” sides of the mental health and substance dependence matter. James became a social worker to work for change, and this dichotomy was unacceptable. Reliance was born out of this frustration as a possible solution for the those that it is able to serve. Substance use, mental health, or spiritual change are all goals Reliance will seek to facilitate alongside you.

A core part of humanity is to feel belonging. Many people experience that most intensely during childhood from their family and friends. As we grow older we develop other relationships that give us that sense of belonging. When you experience injuries to those relationships it can leave yo feeling isolated and depressed. When those injuries happen during childhood it is referred to as developmental trauma. But trauma is not a life sentence, in fact what many people don't know is that post-traumatic growth is more common than Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I work with individuals and families who want to understand trauma and grow.

We often seek therapy when we feel overwhelmed by depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, or a life transition. I create an empathic, non-judgmental space where you can gain insight, recognize your strengths, and become more confident and secure. I believe each person is the expert on their own life and experience. Together, we’ll identify the patterns that are holding you back, as well as your unique strengths. I tailor my approach to best meet your needs and abilities. Sometimes, that means I provide practical, active strategies so you can feel more calm, balanced, and empowered.

My clinical and work experience include working in a hospital psychiatric unit with all dynamics of mental health issues, including suicidal ideation, depression, schizophrenia, substance abuse, bipolar, borderline, psychosis, domestic violence, sexual abuse, PTSD and TBI's.
I believe in a non-judgmental, person-centered, positive approach in the counseling relationship, where the client feels comfortable enough to express their feelings and thoughts while examining factors which may be causing them pain, anxiety, or unhappiness. I also believe that individuals have the power within themselves to overcome these personal barriers to attain their full potential. My goal is to support you and give you tools to use along the way, and also in your future. There is light at the end of what may seem a dark tunnel, but together we will work to get you there.

Do you experience negative thoughts about yourself, frequent worries about the future, or maybe even become so numb that you feel nothing at all? I believe that everyone has some sort of trauma from their past that continues to affect their well-being and relationships with others. I will be curious about what you are showing up to therapy with; because I believe that our symptoms tell a story. They tell us what helped us to survive in a sometimes harsh and unjust world, but maybe no longer serve us. In order words, the things we do that once protected us, are usually the same things that hold us back today.

Psychosis Therapists

What’s the most effective treatment for psychosis?

The most effective treatment for psychosis is coordinated specialty care. In this model, a team of professionals works with a patient to address all aspects of the underlying disorder. This approach incorporates individual or group therapy, employment and education support, family support and education, medication management (which often involves low doses of antipsychotics), and case management to facilitate problem-solving as needed.

When should people seek treatment for psychosis?

People should seek immediate treatment at the earliest indication of psychosis. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized or blocked speech, and agitated body movements. Early signs that a person may be developing a disorder that will lead to psychosis include suspiciousness of others, memory problems and distractibility, an inability to think clearly, rapid or nonsensical speech, withdrawal from friends or family, aggression toward others, and sensitivity to bright lights or noises.

What if psychosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, psychosis can have significant repercussions, including injuries, job loss, homelessness, financial or legal trouble, ruptured relationships, and suffering for the person and their family. While early treatment for psychosis often yields the best results, there is no point past which it becomes useless to seek treatment. At any point, treatment can make a difference.

How do I get someone else to seek treatment for psychosis?

It’s extremely difficult to watch a loved one suffer from hallucinations, delusions, and other elements of psychosis—sometimes exacerbated by their fears of treatment. Have a conversation with them in a quiet space and maintain a calm, supportive tone. Share your concerns about behaviors you’ve observed, suggest treatment, and explain the potential benefits. Listen carefully to their responses. The person may not be ready after one conversation, but with time, they may come around.
