My personal theoretical foundation is not limited to one approach. I believe it is necessary for counselors to be adaptive. Every client is different and our responses and approaches should be equally diverse. One person may need a cognitive behavioral approach whereas another would be more responsive to brief counseling. This eclectic approach will be applied to all clients. Techniques will vary between clients to best meet the individual client's needs.

The therapist is present to support and walk alongside the client on their path to well-being. I believe that people have the solutions to their problems and challenges within themselves and the therapist’s job is to help excavate what is buried within.

Feeling like you’re too much and not enough at the same time? Sometimes we experience things in life that cause us to harden; we end up having to create armor to walk through the world more safely. There's so much wisdom in that armor, in the ways we learn to protect ourselves. But sometimes that armor does not serve us; it gets in the way of truly living, and experiencing care and support from those we want to let in. Maybe you’re struggling with how past painful experiences are impacting your current relationships, possibly while struggling to even know who you are. We can’t change the past, but we can find a healing path forward.

I believe one of the bravest things you can do is begin to understand your own story. I understand firsthand just how difficult it can be to ask for help. Let’s face it not many of us enjoy feeling vulnerable. Are you tired of feeling judged or facing backlash because of your outlook on life, just want to heal from trauma bonds and negative mindsets? Facing a life changing diagnosis and need help processing? Allow me to assist you with healing through mindfulness based, client centered, cultural sensitive, ect, practices. Life happens even when therapy isn’t in session so learn some new techniques that will help ease your stress.

We feel pain in many ways; worry, anger, confusion, and sadness. Our past has taught us how to respond to these feelings. Problems start when the way we have learned to cope is no longer working for us. My goal is to help identify thoughts, emotions, and action patterns. I promote mindfulness, art therapy, mind-body connection, and cognitive behavioral change. From there, we can collaborate to work toward your goals and find a more fulfilling way to live.

Overall, I consider myself a "worldly nurturer". "Worldly", because I have worked with people from all backgrounds, cultures, ages, and walks of life to "nurture" their potential. All of my experiences have taught me the foundational skills that I use in my profession today, which are: patience, the ability to listen, the understanding that listening is as paramount as speaking, the capabilities to be resourceful, valuing modesty and humility whilst still being confident and capable, and having faith in my skill-set while still being open to professionally growing and developing.

People enter into a counseling relationship when nothing else seems to be working. Although most people soon make comments such as, “(Counseling) was a lot better than I thought it would be”, few people seek counseling as a first option. More often we seek out techniques that either help us to temporarily avoid (e.g., media, social networking) our anxiety, or we seek temporary shots of pleasure (e.g., alcohol, food, pornography) that make us feel good for a short time. Soon enough we realize that all of these things leave us feeling more hollow and lonely, and that is when we start thinking about counseling.

Medication Management Therapists

What are the most effective ways to manage medications?

One of the most effective ways a patient can manage their medications is to keep a list of each drug and dosage they take. Such a list can be helpful in keeping to their schedule and can also be something they bring to their psychiatrist or other physician so that the healthcare provider has a clear picture of what they’re taking and in what quantity. Using a pill organizer can be useful for memory and organization. Patients should discuss their medications and their effects at every appointment.

What are the risks if medications are not managed properly?

A suboptimal approach to medication management can lead to potentially harmful health outcomes. Most psychiatric drugs have side effects, and if a patient is not aware of them, they may seek additional medical help or over the counter or prescription drugs to treat the side effects, which may have its own side effects, a process called “prescription cascade.” Another risk to disorganization is that a psychiatrist without full knowledge of a patient’s regimen could prescribe a medication that should not be mixed with a patient’s existing drugs.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to get help managing their medications?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing medication management as a tool for improving their life and avoiding dangerous side effects. Offering specific examples of an individual’s failure to properly manage their medication regimen should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to break management down into parts, and there are several apps that can be used to organize which drugs are ingested, when they need to be refilled, and how they should be stored.

Are there natural treatments that can replace medications?

While there are many medications that can be vital to mental health, there are some natural lifestyle changes that can help reduce the need for drugs. Regular exercise, good sleep habits, a healthy diet, and therapy can all go a long way in symptom relief. Psychiatric medications typically treat symptoms but do not necessarily treat the cause of the condition. Many clinicians consider medications an adjunct to treatment rather than a treatment in and of itself.
