In todays climate it is not uncommon to have anxiety, depression, or even find yourself turning to substances that maybe you have not in the past. I recognize that not only adults, but our children are having to face mental health issues, that before may not have been on their radar. I recognize these mental health issues are on the rise and you just may need someone to talk to or process your world around you with all these stressors. I have worked in hospice for a decade, helping patients and families navigate the end of life process, as well as work with trauma patients from military experience and auto accidents.

"Mental health isn't a thing. Talking about feelings and experiences isn't going to help. Things will get better by just putting my head down and powering through. I'm strong, self-reliant, and I don't need any help. I'll be fine just the way I am." These are all valid thoughts and feelings for an individual to have and many people believe these statements are true. Stereotypically, men especially, fall into these thought patterns. The numbers reflect this, approximately 30% vs 70% of those seeking counseling are men vs women. We are taught men don't have feelings and if they do they sure as hell don't talk to anybody about them.

Young adulthood can be one of the most challenging times of life. From the demands of school/work, to relationships and friendships – there’s a lot to juggle. All of this can leave you feeling anxious and depressed. Life’s challenges can feel impossible to navigate on your own. Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, you get blindsided. Maybe it’s a breakup. Maybe it’s the loss of a job. Maybe you begin to question your own values, your path in life, or realize you no longer have things in common with the people you once knew. Whatever your struggle may be, I want you to know that I’ve been there and that there is hope.

You recently discovered your child or teen may need counseling and are thinking, "Now what?!" It could be that your child is acting out and their teacher recommended counseling; maybe your teen told you they question if anyone cares about them; or you began fostering a child and know they need the extra support; or maybe it's the stresses of everyday life that are bogging you down and you need some sort of outlet. One of the hardest things about being in a time of despair is feeling alone, as if no one understands you, and then being so scared to take that first next step without knowing where to turn or what questions to ask.

People come to me because they feel trapped, depressed, anxious or angry, or stuck in a rut. There is a huge gap between expectations and reality together with a breakdown in their mind, body, emotions, and spirit. They feel unregulated, unbalanced, unable to sleep, exhausted, in pain, in fight or flight mode most of the time and sometimes, have suicidal tendencies. They are crying or screaming in one way or the other. They want relief, things to go back to where they were, change, peace of mind and time to heal. Most importantly, they want love and compassion.

The reason clients continue to refer family and friends to me, is because I connects with them in a non-judgmental laid-back professional way. During my 30+ years of counseling, I have dealt with clients whom in their life journey have picked up anxiety, depression and hopelessness. In my sessions I use many tools to help them understand, reflect and solve their issues. This will relieve them of stress. Come see me, and together we peel the layers of your problem and get to the core and solve it.

A call for therapy is placed because some area of life is just not working. As a psychologist, my focus is on assisting each individual, couple or family in working towards and reaching the goals that brought them in. Together, we identify the nature of the challenges being faced and work together to get life back on track. I practice as a family psychologist, working with whomever comes into my office. Each one of us is part of a bigger circle and thus the work also focuses on those with whom the person works or lives, as relevant.

My specialty lies in trauma and complicated grief and loss. We all need a safe place to talk and express our emotions...knowing that the person listening understands the impact of YOUR loss/trauma on YOUR life. Many times we learn through our tragedies...but ALWAYS it changes who we are and our perspective. By talking out the new emotional/perspective changes, at times forced upon you, we can defuse the shame, the fear, and the doubts; helping you move forward from tragedy. The fact is you CAN move forward, through and past tragedy.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
