For years, I struggled to deal with childhood abuse and neglect, my mother's early death, my younger brother's suicide and my older brother's incarceration. I defined myself by those experiences. And then I realized that my inability to heal from my past was hindering my present and sabotaging my future. It wasn't until I did the work to heal and strengthen myself mentally and physically that I was able to not only heal from the pain of the past but also take action to live fully in my present positioning myself for the future that I want. Now I want to help you.

People come to me because they feel trapped, depressed, anxious or angry, or stuck in a rut. There is a huge gap between expectations and reality together with a breakdown in their mind, body, emotions, and spirit. They feel unregulated, unbalanced, unable to sleep, exhausted, in pain, in fight or flight mode most of the time and sometimes, have suicidal tendencies. They are crying or screaming in one way or the other. They want relief, things to go back to where they were, change, peace of mind and time to heal. Most importantly, they want love and compassion.

You are constantly telling yourself, “Be strong!"? Are you trying to ignore racing thoughts? You seem to start each day more mentally exhausted than the day before, wishing and hoping for something to change. Maybe you lost a loved one, your child, a pet, were told you have a chronic illness/disease, realized that your relationship is in shambles, are haunted by childhood experiences, or the pressures of your life/ job have begun to take their toll. You have thought of therapy but rationalize with yourself that “it isn’t so bad” and that you can keep trying to “fix yourself” only to find yourself circling in a self-blaming pattern.

Whether you are a child or teen dealing with peer pressure or the stressors at school, a stay at home parent trying to manage everyones busy schedules, a working professional balancing family life and the stress a job can bring, a single or divorced parent struggling to get through each day, a young adult looking for direction in life, or part of a family trying to raise your kids in this increasingly complex world, I have extensive experience in all of these areas. I am committed to helping you work through these challenges.

The Safe and Sound Protocol is suitable for all ages—children, adolescents, and adults.
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a transformative, evidence-based music therapy rooted in the Polyvagal Theory. It’s designed to help your nervous system move out of states of dysregulation—whether you’re experiencing underactivity (e.g., depression, inattention, impulsivity, social inhibition), overactivity (e.g., anxiety, emotional dysregulation, sleep issues), or complex dysregulation (e.g., sensory issues, food sensitivity, trauma, social difficulties). As a powerful adjunct to regular therapy, SSP can be conveniently completed at home and on your own schedule, offering flexibility and comfort.

Do you struggle everyday to just get through the things you have to do? Have you often woken up and thought 'there has to be more to life than this'? Do you feel overwhelmed easily by things that don't seem to upset other people? Have you struggled with self-harming, over spending, or using something else to numb out the pain that just won't seem to go away? These questions are ones that so many people suffer through on a daily basis. The decision to come to therapy can be scary and so brave at the same time.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
