As a Registered Play Therapist, I specialize in children ages 4-12 years. I engage them with both therapeutic play, creative arts interventions and therapeutic games. When children and young adolescents come to therapy they need to feel safe and enjoy the experience while learning skills to improve how they feel. When families come to therapy, they look for guidance from an experienced therapist who will join with their family and help them navigate through their family issues. Depression, anxiety, trauma, anger, divorce, adoption and life adjustments are all issues that lead many children and families to seek specialized treatment.

I offer ADHD and Autism assessments that are neurodiversity affirming.
My guess is you are here because you or your child have recently discovered something about yourselves that has made life challenging. Maybe you just got a diagnosis from another provider and you don't know what to do with it. Maybe you're looking for a diagnosis that won't be delivered in a stigmatizing manner. For this reason, I'm very happy you are here! Taking that first step to learn more about yourself is challenging. I'm glad you are able to take this next step in your mental health journey!

I previously worked as a Registered Behavior Technician in a pediatric Autism clinic.
Counseling looks different for everyone-it is not one size fits all. I use methods that work for you in that moment and can vary by session. What you may need one day may not be what you will need the next. I aim to give you a safe, non-judgmental space to tell your story how and when you are ready. Together, we will have honest, sometimes uncomfortable but needed conversations. We will address barriers, examine boundaries, set goals, and work towards finding your voice.

I have worked with those diagnosed with depression, anxiety, autism, and substance abuse disorders.
Many people feel like they walk alone. That they have no one that they can turn to. Embarrassment, fear, anxiety, or any number of things keeps them form reaching out. But at some moment they have a spark and decide to change. They want to improve in their life, someway, somehow.

Welcome! My passion as a therapist is rooted in helping others recognize and fulfill their potential, while navigating life’s inevitable challenges. I view going to therapy as a chance to be “selfish” in a world where we are often consumed with fulfilling obligations outside of ourselves. Therapy is an opportunity for clients to invest in themselves, take time to process their feelings, and reflect upon events in their lives. My approach as a therapist leans heavily on evidence based practices, and is tailored towards the individual needs of each client.

In child therapy (ages 8-12), I specialize in autism, ADHD, and behavioral concerns, as well as working with parents on parenting skills.
As human beings, we are constantly striving toward becoming our most authentic selves. When we are living life authentically, we can envision a clear path toward what is truly important to us, and can build a life filled with purpose and joy. This journey toward authenticity can become complicated by challenges such as life stressors, past trauma, mental health issues, and more. When these challenges arise, I aim to provide guidance to my clients in helping them re-align with their values and come back to what is most important in their lives, once again illuminating the path toward authenticity.

Autism Therapists

What is the most effective treatment for autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.

How does ABA work?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.

How does treatment for autism work?

Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.

How long does therapy for autism take?

Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
