I use interventions based on your individual needs and life experience combining elements of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), compassion-focused therapy (CPT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
I have been practicing clinical social work with children, adults and adolescents for twenty-five years. I strive to provide treatment that is supportive, accepting and one that encourages each individual's unique personal exploration and growth. I use a relaxed, interactive and educational approach to treating depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction and recovery, co-occurring disorders, parenting/family support and adjustment to life transitions.

Each of us has our own learned ways of coping or dealing with stressors, however sometimes the stress can become so overwhelming that we are no longer effective with our methods. This is a time when we should reach out for extra support to get things back on track. I would be honored to help you “regroup”, “refocus on priorities” and “set attainable goals”. My therapeutic approach is primarily both strength-based and interpersonal. I will meet you where you are on this path to wellness and help guide you in the direction you want to be. Start your journey today.

Finding someone to trust and confide in with life's demands can be challenging. To put yourself out there and say, "Here are my problems," can be intimidating and scary. It is my hope to create an environment where you will feel safe, free from judgement, and better prepared to explore and improve your life. My goal is to help you on your journey to self discovery, growth and happiness. You are your greatest teacher and together my hope is for us to achieve your greatest potential. I am open to working with clients of all ages, ethnicities, religious beliefs, and sexual orientations.

As a prior military police officer, I recognize that we are all fighting a battle against something in life, and we can only use the tools we have gathered through our experiences. Unless someone comes alongside us, we cannot learn new things and grow into better champions for ourselves. My approach to therapy is rooted in relationships but is also very direct and focused. I use a combination of modalities with the goal of providing brief therapeutic interventions to help clients get back on track in their marriages, families, or individual lives.

You have the ability to activate the change you seek. Like a river, your journey through life can at times be bumpy, going over several rocks, sticks and stones. It can overflow with excessive rainfall or dry up with no moisture. It can be shallow or deep. I believe in times of darkness the light is found within. Counseling can help you find peace inside yourself so that your river may never stop flowing. The counseling process is unique to every individual and is designed to encourage maximum growth within a supportive environment. Together we will identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil.

Nobody knows you like you know yourself. Your past decisions weigh on you and stop you from moving forward, to a place of peace and growth. Your past does not determine your future, each day is a new opportunity to start fresh. You may doubt who you are or what you want out of life, but you are the keeper of your story and do have power over your future. Your journey to finding the best life possible begins when you decide to make the change. I consider it an honor to walk down the path of exploration with you. No journey is too big or small, I believe in honoring all of life’s moments with my clients in a nonjudgmental environment.

With almost all clients, I integrate the behavioral approaches of acceptance & commitment therapy (ACT) and compassion-focused therapy (CFT) to help you discover what's important, take meaningful action in that direction, and use mindfulness skills to relate more compassionately, rather than judgmentally, to painful thoughts and emotions.
Most of my clients come to me with anxiety, obsessive compulsive, or trauma disorders. They find their worlds shrinking as a result and aren't sure how to break the cycle. For clients with anxiety and trauma disorders, I use exposure therapy to break cycles of fear, anxiety, and avoidance. I also see clients troubled by marginalization due to identity, relationship struggles, substance use, and psychotic disorders, and they too deal with pain that gets in the way of what's important in their lives. They often feel trapped or stuck and want to find a way through the barriers keeping them from meaning and purpose in their lives.

I incorporate ideas borrowed from cognitive behavioral therapy, self-compassion therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, and mindfulness to promote this growth.
We all want to live a life full of happiness, joy, and meaning. However, life can be difficult at times, making this a challenge to do. I strongly believe you have the skills and ability to successfully traverse through these tough times. However, sometimes this is very hard to do, but this is not indicative of your ability to cope with things. Over the course of my career in mental health I have had the honor of meeting many people who were able to do this. My role, working with them, has been to act as a companion, sometimes a guide, and sometimes a sounding board, to assist them in making this happen.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
