Everyone deserves a sense of control over their lives. When terrible things happen it can feel like the wind has been knocked out of you. The world feels unsafe. Feelings of deep sadness, fear, shame and a rawness seem to linger. Many people feel as though they are damaged goods and wonder if they will ever be themselves again, or if they will ever be happy again. Imagine what it will be like when you have more good days then bad, when you feel the laughter, when you hear your child start to sing again. In a relaxed, safe environment you will receive support, encouragement, and the skills you need to thrive not just survive.

One of my guiding beliefs as a therapist is that you already possess the strength, ability and innate qualities needed to grow and change, we just have to work together to identify and remove the obstacles standing in your way from becoming your best self. My goal is to help you discover realistic solutions to problematic patterns of thinking and behaving that are keeping you from feeling your best, and learn coping skills that produce lasting change in order to live a more fulfilling life.

I became a therapist because I believe people are pretty incredible. My heart is in supporting and empowering women in navigating their relationship with themselves, their body and food and the messy, meaningful work of living authentically. I specialize in eating disorders/body image, OCD, perinatal anxiety and depression, traumatic birth, miscarriage/infant loss, overcoming perfectionism and anxiety, and sexual trauma. I practice from an anti-racist, LGBTQIA+-affirming, intuitive eating and Health At Every Size-informed foundation and am a certified Perinatal Mental Health clinician (PMH-C).

Are you are dealing with a life transition (birth of baby, postpartum depression, parenting issues, divorce, grief/loss), struggling with anxiety/depression or dealing with boundary issues? Sometimes getting to the next chapter can seem ominous when pain is intense. Transformation is possible…I truly believe it! I have also experienced such as a cancer survivor and more. There is hope, a ‘second chance’ and restoration for you. I have worked as a therapist over 25 years with various situations.

I most recently assisted in facilitating a support group for women experiencing postpartum depression.
Often life’s transitions can be difficult to navigate and we can have barriers, past or present, which inhibit our ability to change and adapt. I believe in the individuals’ ability to change and reconcile ourselves with the challenges and difficulties that life presents.

Are you tired of the same argument over and over again? Feeling unheard in your relationship? Frustrated because no matter what you do, you just can’t get it right with your partner? Missing the intimacy and connection with the person you love the most? The most important relationships in our lives can be the source of some of our greatest joy, as well as our greatest pain. It’s no coincidence that our most important relationships can often take the most work, though this work can be enriching and productive. Now more than ever, resilient, connected relationships can have a profound effect on mental health and well-being.

People are sometimes challenged by turbulent emotions, transitions, losses or chronic mood issues. The day to day experience of emotional distress or an underlying sense of uneasiness affect vitality and are difficult to endure over time. Verbal dialogue within a relationship designed for you to freely express yourself, explore feelings and discover unconscious factors impacting you describes the change process of psychotherapy. I have seen many individuals over the years not only have symptom relief but find new paths while shedding patterns of disabling emotions, thoughts and behavior.

I believe psychotherapy should be supportive and empowering. The therapeutic relationship is critical to growth and change. Having strong therapeutic supports can strengthen a person and free them to find connection in the midst of confusion, overcome difficult life challenges, face their fears or move past a barrier that seemed insurmountable.

I know what it's like to feel lost, confused, and as though you're stuck at a crossroads with no directions. I also know how important connection and understanding are in those times. I believe the beauty of therapy is how it can disentangle the confusion, revealing profound change, empowerment, and freedom. I can work with individuals or couples encountering a variety of concerns. I am particularly experienced to help clients navigating through relationship issues such as codependency, boundaries, infidelity, mood disorders, and personality disorders. I am drawn to help women recovering from abusive relationships and trauma.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
