Sometimes in life we struggle with anxiety, low self-esteem, how to set good boundaries, or figuring out who we are. Sometimes we need someone to bounce thoughts and ideas off of, someone to practice boundaries with, someone to help set goals, or just someone to listen and understand. I believe my role is to be a helper. You have the best idea of what you need, and my job is to help you find those skills within yourself.

Relationships can be hard. You can love someone and still have destructive patterns of communication. I want to help each person learn new and better ways to communicate. Sometimes, we just need to be heard by someone. I want to hear from each client by listening deeply to what they are saying. I have worked with many couples and individuals over the years to build stronger relationships and happier lives.

The therapist is present to support and walk alongside the client on their path to well-being. I believe that people have the solutions to their problems and challenges within themselves and the therapist’s job is to help excavate what is buried within.

The best outcome will occur if you choose someone who best matches your understanding of what the problem is and how to solve it. In a brief initial phone call, I can give some explanation of how I might approach your specific situation.

There are several issues in which I have a special interest in, such as, adoption-related issues, couple concerns, parenting concerns and issues related to trauma.
I believe people are relational-beings, meaning, we develop and live our lives in relationships with others. When these relationships become distressed, it can lead to a multitude of feelings, such as depression, stress, anxiety and an overall feeling of uneasiness. These are the times when a person may need some guidance and help accessing their personal resources to find more balance in those relationships and in life in general.

Foster and adoption is also a topic close to Corrie’s heart.
With a theatre and education background Corrie has a unique perspective in working with children and adolescents. Her experience with young children includes four years as a professional nanny. Corrie then taught and directed theatre at the middle school level for ten years. It was her students that inspired her to get her master’s degree in professional counseling. Her time at Texas State University was meaningful and prepared her for three years as a school counselor.

Hello! I’m a licensed clinical social worker and I have worked in school social work, foster care, adoption, adolescent residential treatment, crisis assessment at Pine Rest Hospital, and outpatient treatment. I have been in private practice for 20 years. It is my privilege to listen to, and be with, people in their stories. Making sense of our narrative is a fundamental component to a healthy mind and spirit. And making peace with our perfectly imperfect, and unique version of humanity is essential for our emotional life and our thought space. It would be my privilege to hear your story. Peace, Amy

The majority of my time in the field has been within the child welfare system, which has allowed me to specialize in trauma treatment, as well as foster care/adoption.
I am Clinical Therapist with over 10 years of experience working primarily with children, teens, and young adults. I use various play techniques and engaging activities to learn about the areas of need a child may have and what kinds of behaviors those needs have impacted. I am happy to work with parents who might be needing guidance or feedback regarding their children's behaviors or mental health needs as well. In addition to working with children, I also see some adolescents and young adults struggling with life changes and other mental health needs.

I am a clinical behavioral therapist with a private practice focusing mainly on children and families. I enjoy working with children and use various play techniques to explore the lagging skills which may have developed strong responses and behaviors to stressors in your child. There are many instances in which I will accept the parent as client to address behaviors in the home. I work with siblings when appropriate and have worked with clients ages 4-adulthood.

My approach is person-centered, gentle, calming, and trauma-informed. I understand how challenging it can be to trust someone new, so I do my best to earn your trust by being non-judgmental, consistent, reliable, and prioritizing what you want to get out of therapy. Once that trust is earned, I enjoy the privilege of joining you in exploring your values, identity, habits that work and ones that don’t, skills to manage stressful situations, and responses that help you live a more manageable and enjoyable life. Clients say I am calming, honest, respectful, supportive, and encouraging.

The relationship between client and clinician is a key component of treatment efficacy. I believe that this therapeutic relationship is founded in a spirit of collaboration, an emotional bond and an agreement on goals and tasks. Two main characteristics of therapy are critical to the building of this therapeutic alliance: expertise and compassion. I am confident in my ability to help resolve any issues in a satisfying manner, prepared in both theory and practice, clear in my thoughts, ideas, and logical in the problem solving process. Of equal importance, I am accepting, understanding and genuinely interested in you and your needs.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
