OCD has many variations, and each person's experience with it is somewhat unique to them, but I believe that there is a path to recovery for each person! I work with OCD clients to understand their experience of OCD and help them on their path to recovery.
I specialize in helping individuals who are experiencing symptoms of OCD, including Pure-O versions of OCD. “ Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder can be characterized by primarily obsessions, primarily compulsions, or a combination of both. Obsessions are defined as recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced as intrusive and cause anxiety or distress. Compulsions are defined as repetitive behaviors or mental acts that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly.” DSM-5

For OCD and anxiety; CBT, ERP, ACT, and stress management techniques help to eliminate or decrease symptoms.
I am a Trauma, (PTSD) and OCD therapist with over 35 years of experience treating adults. I am passionate in my resolve to help my patients end their suffering from trauma, anxiety and OCD. Often times, these individuals have worked diligently in other types of therapy without achieving symptom relief. In my experience and according to current research, it appears that unresolved memories of trauma, neglect, emotional and/or physical abuse, contribute to underlying causes for chronic depression, emotional or physical pain. I take pride on being up to date on the current mind-body focus on overall wellness

I am also trained in ERP and have successfully treated many clients with OCD.
Do you experience negative thoughts about yourself, frequent worries about the future, or maybe even become so numb that you feel nothing at all? I believe that everyone has some sort of trauma from their past that continues to affect their well-being and relationships with others. I will be curious about what you are showing up to therapy with; because I believe that our symptoms tell a story. They tell us what helped us to survive in a sometimes harsh and unjust world, but maybe no longer serve us. In order words, the things we do that once protected us, are usually the same things that hold us back today.

Areas of emphasis: Depression, anxiety, trauma, intergenerational trauma, racial/ethnic/gender identity, OCD, family of origin issues, attachment, narcissistic abuse, self-criticism/shame.
Life is hard! Pause for a moment and give yourself credit for taking this brave, difficult step. You're respecting your struggles AND looking for constructive ways to address them. I use a collaborative and exploratory (rather than expert) model to help you develop/access resources to navigate life's difficulties. I use approaches supported by research while recognizing the limits of evidence-based therapies which often need to be adapted, abandoned, or incorporated with other practices to meet a person's realities, needs, and strengths. I strive to create a safe supportive relationship and deeply value feedback and dialogue.

I believe that everyone has their own unique life story to share. When life seems out of control and overwhelming it is very important to have a safe and confidential space to talk with a professional. Anxiety, depression and obsessive thought patterns can feel very isolating and paralyzing at times. The goal is to feel better and talk through these emotions and thoughts in order to cope effectively. It is so important to take care of your whole self and starting with our mental health is the first step to feeling better.

I have mostly worked with anxiety, depression, trauma, and OCD.
In my therapy room, YOU guide the direction for our sessions. You’ll have a safe and judgment-free space to open up about things you wouldn’t discuss with even your closest friends. Common topics of exploration include life history, attachments, survival mechanisms, biology, and intergenerational trauma. We will also discuss daily stressors and develop coping skills. I use an integrative approach mostly using the following modalities to guide sessions: psychodynamic, IFS, attachment theory, cognitive behavioral, biological and mindfulness. I received a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Wayne State University.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
