I use a CBT framework for individuals and Emotionally Focused Therapy or the Gottman Method for couples/families.
Life’s challenges can often wear us down, particularly when they affect our relationships, draining the affection and love we have for those we care about most. With over 30 years of experience, I am committed to helping others overcome the obstacles that prevent them from enjoying the life and relationships they desire. My counseling style is personal, warm, and supportive. I understand that discussing deep issues with a stranger can be intimidating, which is why I strive to create a friendly, non-judgmental space where individuals can talk openly about their lives and work on their issues.

My philosophy is that curiosity is what life is about. I am constantly curious about life and about my clients. I strive to learn as much as I can so I can work together with clients to help them better their lives and reach their goals. I try to pull from many therapeutic models, using what works best for the client. I truly believe that with open eyes and a kind heart, I can meet the client where they are and help bring them to where they want to be.

Everything has patterns; the way we think, behave and feel. Most of us developed these in childhood and continue them throughout our lives. Sometimes they are helpful and sometimes they cause us suffering and pain. Learning to identify these patterns and distinguish which are healthy and unhealthy can help to build a more enriching and engaging life. I focus on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Attachment Theory and Mindfulness to help client's process through their patterns, emotions and relationships in a safe and relaxed environment. Change can only happen when there is trust and respect.

My philosophy as a therapist is to always meet the client where they're in life. This could include conflict with a spouse, children or any of the number of curveballs life throws at us. Life has many stressors and changes that can be difficult to handle at times and my goal is to help you through these challenges. I work with my clients to determine what goals they want to achieve in therapy and how best to do so. It has always been my objective to work for the goals of the client and to realize everyone has different backgrounds, beliefs and experiences that make us who we are.

Life is complicated and full of challenges. No wonder, then, that nearly everyone, at one time or another, can benefit from psychotherapy. Particularly if you are struggling with depression, anxiety, or life problems that threaten your sense of well-being on a daily basis, you owe it to yourself to learn how to be happier. In addition to alleviating the suffering caused by mental and emotional disorders, I have the knowledge base and skills to help you become your best self--to move not only from misery to greater well-being, but also beyond that to flourishing.

No matter where your journey began or leads, it is my hope that we will tackle its obstacles together. Please know, you matter. Your journey matters. Your thoughts and experiences past, present, and future matter. These difficulties you experience are only parts of you. You get to choose how they contribute to who you are - and that is what's important.

Gottman Method Therapists

How does the Gottman method work?

One of the core doctrines of the Gottman method is that negative emotions hurt relationships about five times more than positive emotions help them. Thus, couples require five times more positive interactions than negative interactions with each other. The therapist will guide clients on how to improve communication and understanding of each other to manage conflict and have their emotional needs met. The therapist will also advise couples on how to repair relations with each other when conflict arises, and therefore avoid lasting damage.

Is the Gottman method evidence-based?

Yes, this method is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy. The method is based on more than 40 years of research by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, the psychologists who developed the method. The Gottmans analyzed decades of data to draw conclusions about what types of interactions are likely to lead to specific results, and which interventions are most likely to lead to success. Studies have found that this approach leads to improvements in relationship satisfaction, intimacy, communication skills, and a lower rate of divorce.

How long does the Gottman method take?

The duration of treatment depends on the specific challenges clients face. Sessions are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, and an average course of treatment is around 10 sessions. In some cases, such as for couples dealing with a critical problem, the therapist will suggest an intensive course of treatment, with daily sessions over the first two to four days. Treatment is complete when the couple is satisfied and has met the goals they’ve set, and when the therapist believes they have the skills to continue on their own.

Is the Gottman method effective?

Through the Gottman method, couples can achieve changes that are real and sustainable. This treatment has been used for more than 40 years; the method is supported by empirical research, including randomized controlled trials that have demonstrated effectiveness in improving relationship outcomes for couples. Like any talk therapy, success or failure depends in large part on how committed the clients are to making positive changes and working toward results.
