I enjoy working with the LGBTQIA+ community, kink aware therapy, substance abuse counseling, trauma informed counseling, and couple’s counseling.
I believe that the foundation of a successful therapeutic relationship is compassion and understanding. My aim is to work together to develop the best approach for the individual in therapy and adjust accordingly to the individual’s needs. By establishing goals with the individual, we can address the concerns and underlying issues that can change difficult. I have been in private practice for the last three years, where I earned my LMSW and have worked with a wide variety of clients. I am also a proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community and worked to advocate for social justice.

I have worked with a variety of challenges, though my greatest expertise is in the area of porn/sex addiction, marital issues, depression and anxiety, and ADHD for children and adults.
Life is tough. No doubt about it. Sometimes its downright overwhelming. In these times it is especially beneficial to have someone to help you as you wade through it all. People come to counseling for a variety of reasons. Probably most people who voluntarily come to counseling are looking for some healing, and the hope of moving forward with their life. How about you? Do you want to get your "heart" back? Make some changes? Move forward with your life? That's good. I'd like to help you with that.

I tell all of my clients that the safe space of therapy is yours and I just work there. Even with virtual sessions, it is still your space and I just provide the tools. Hello, I am Melissa Ridge, LLPC, Trauma-Focused Mental Health Therapist. My passion is empowering clients to use their own strength and skills I teach them to heal and grow in their mental health. Therapy is not a cookie cutter concept; and not every therapist is a good fit for every client and that is okay. My specialties are trauma, domestic violence, sexual abuse recovery, substance abuse, depression, anxiety, couples, adolescents and teens.

Immediate Openings! Sometimes we get caught up in the messiness of life and forget to enjoy it! I get it, life can be stressful. All of our feelings are normal but sometimes we feel them more intense and they might even make our day to day lives extra challenging (anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, negative thoughts, sound familiar?) You are deserving of a life you enjoy living and I am here to help you get back to your best, authentic self.

Each person has a unique life experience; the challenges they face and strengths they draw from are wholly their own. My aim as a therapist is to help clients see things from a new perspective, and tap into their strengths and resilience to meet their goals. I see each client as a person, rather than a diagnosis, and try to meet them where they are at in life’s journey. Together, we collaborate to form a person-centered treatment plan that reflects the client’s needs and goals.

I have experience working with adults adjusting to changes in relationships, changes at work, changes due to aging, changes due to medical conditions or diagnoses, and addiction.
My ideal client is someone who has experienced something in their life that prompted them to want to change some aspect of themselves and their environment. Because change is always hard, even when for the better, you may need some assistance with implementing change and everything that comes along with change such as resistance from family and friends, establishing new boundaries and gaining a renewed sense of self. Ideally you are motivated to achieve goals and open to new ideas.

Maya Angelou once said, "There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." Finding a therapist you feel safe telling your story to can be scary; not telling your story can be agony.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
