Are you looking for assistance with managing stress, relationships, grief, parenting, anxiety, trauma and/or depression? Or, are you interested in help with weight loss, adjustment to illness, or stopping smoking? I am a board certified Health Psychologist specializing in short-term counseling (usually 6-10 visits but could be more/less). I believe that people benefit more from short spurts of counseling over a lifetime (as needed) rather than meeting regularly for long periods of time. I give you the skills. You live life and return as needed. I offer individual, couples, and family therapy.

The foundation of every therapeutic relationship is built on empathy, trust and unconditional positive regard. Most often I find that my clients just want a safe person to trust who is able to kindly challenge them when needed while offering a fresh perspective to their own thinking. I am honored to afford my clients both the presence and the space they need to heal from their pain. I believe life is a journey. I believe in the presence and power of God in the healing process as well as the importance of personal choice, responsibility and perspective.

Are you still struggling with feelings of not being enough, being too much, insecurity in relationships, rejection sensitivity, and fear of abandonment? Did you grow up in a dysfunctional family atmosphere? Did trauma(s) during crucial developmental years affect the way you connect with yourself and others? I focus on working with adults who are coping with the effects of developmental/complex PTSD (cPTSD) and/or growing up in a dysfunctional family environment. Trauma is an experience that overwhelms our ability to cope. In relationships a rupture (physical or emotional) in our primary attachment can cause traumatic effects.

Counseling is an avenue for moving ahead in life by solving the problems that block this process. These issues involve many areas of life including relationships, disappointments, thoughts, feelings, behaviors, losses, abuse, failures, transitions, traumas, lifestyles, belief systems, aging, medical problems, addictions, personality disorders, self-esteem, dependency, and addictions. The way to solve these problems involves talking about the real issues and feelings with someone who is accepting and understanding, learning new information, experimenting with new behaviors, taking some risks, and evaluating the results.

At different times in life, we can become overwhelmed, and feel as if we have lost our center of gravity. Times when our old ways of coping + getting through the day, just aren't cutting it. Whether it is a sudden change disrupting your well-being or a long-suffered pain weighing you down, it is possible to heal. It is possible to feel differently than you do now. Often we are plagued by self-doubt + self-criticism and assume this is "just how I am." That assumption halts our healing. You can learn new skills. You can learn to think, feel, and behave differently. You can heal, grow, and have a different experience of life.

Calling all fiercely compassionate, anxious, self-doubters! Are you kept awake at night by your worries and overthinking? Do you have a nagging voice inside saying you are never good enough? Do you feel dissatisfied with your relationships or just feel stuck? This can be very painful and it’s a common theme for highly attuned individuals (empaths, highly sensitive individuals, and/or chaos/trauma survivors). Unfortunately, we are socialized to avoid painful emotions and when we do so we cause more harm to our minds (hello inner critic!) and our bodies (hello headaches and chronic pain!).

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
