For many people depression and anxiety, as well as other mental health problems can be difficult to treat successfully due to unresolved 'developmental trauma', or trauma related to the attachment type you had to your parent(s) / caregiver(s). I utilize psychodynamic psychotherapy and attachment theory which mainly deal with early connections, good or bad, with primary caretakers. I am also trained in many new treatments based on the latest understanding of brain science, that are effective in treating unresolved developmental trauma, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

If you could wake up tomorrow morning to a life that is exactly how you've always dreamt and visualized, what would that day look like? What is important to you - what are your most cherished values? Upon what do your curiosities hinge and linger? What awakens your inner child? Lends meaning to your being? My desire is to embark on the creative process of therapy with you, and serve as a guide as you explore the roads less traveled toward your most authentic patterns of being. We can take steps on this path via authentic 'I-Thou' encountering within a therapeutic relationship and a clean, well-lighted space.

I'm a clinical social worker specializing in anxiety, depression, and the effects of trauma. I get a kick out of helping my clients see the best in themselves and get "unstuck" during these tough times. My goal is to help you feel at ease and understood. Therapy can be a temporary tool for immediate help or a long-term strategy for wellness. Starting therapy can be a little bit frightening, and overwhelming, but I will provide a supportive and nonjudgmental space where you will be able to explore your past experiences, and current conflicts. It is a relief when you figure things out, put feelings into words, understand yourself, and build from your strengths. As a parent you will learn how to communicate with your kids and teens since they do not come with instruction manuals. There are no silly questions when it comes to parenting. I am trained in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, attachment-based, and mindfulness-based psychotherapy.

You may be wondering what a counseling experience feels like. Let's begin by picturing counseling as a "walking alongside" relationship during a painful, conflicted, or confused time. As we begin talking together, your concerns, and your desires for counseling will lay the foundation for clarifying your goals for therapy. Often, a creative plan for removing obstacles in the way helps us get unstuck and moving forward quite naturally.

“The only constant in life is change.” Are you adjusting to a: new job, relationship, loss of a loved one, or overall change in your way of life? Do you feel overwhelmed by the many changes causing you to feel stagnant? You notice others seemingly accepting change fluidly throughout their lives and are somewhat in awe of the process. You are tired of replaying the same scenario in your head, while your sadness and anxiety escalate.

Do you fit in? Your silent thoughts to yourself question whether others really understand you. It’s tough because you’ve tried so hard to reach out and be friendly and even demonstrate care and compassion for others. Nevertheless, you wonder if that same care get’s directed back at you. Sometimes it feels like you don’t fit in. Do you have questions about whether this means that there is something wrong with you? Probably not! In life, striving to fit in can be an empty pursuit. What if you could switch that and really feel that you belonged instead of just fitting in.

Attachment-based Therapists

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
