Let's skip the part about the platitudes and therapy-speak mumbo jumbo. You know life can be hard, that's why you're on this site! You don't need me to sugar coat it with a trite intro statement. My therapeutic style is influenced by anti-racist theory and queer studies. I work within a disability friendly, body positive, poly/kink affirming, LGBTQIA+ friendly, and anti-racist framework. And, as a neurodivergent clinician, I strive to create an environment that is welcoming for all neurotypes.

Note: current availability is limited to daytime appointments - Welcome! I’m Lio, a therapist at the Mala Child & Family Institute. I’m dedicated to empowering teens and young adults as they navigate LGBTQ+ identity, disability, Autism (including PDA and high-masking profiles), ADHD, and anxiety. As a neurodivergent and queer adult, I know that these experiences are often misunderstood and encounter a range of barriers. I also understand the impact that a safe environment can have on the development of self-worth, self-advocacy, and self-compassion.

In my experience working with clients and in my own therapy, I have found that discovering and addressing the root of mental health struggles is more effective long-term than treating the symptoms. This has led me to pursue training in modalities that are focused on trauma, but can be used to treat challenges like anxiety and depression as well. If you would like to better understand where your struggles or coming from (or if you feel like you totally understand where they're coming from but don't know what to do about it) my approach will likely be a good fit for you.

The areas I specialize in include working with mood disorders, young adults, parenting support, various life transitions, and I am especially passionate about working with LGBTQIA+ individuals as a non-binary therapist (they/them), most especially with gender identity issues. I am also passionate about helping individuals going through infertility experiences, as my wife and I experienced this struggle firsthand before we had our child using IVF treatment. I love offering a compassionate approach to these sensitive subjects as individuals navigate their options and explore the complex emotions associated with infertility in therapy.

Holistic wellness is about finding a seat in a world increasingly marked by systemic barriers. Very often, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ individuals aren't given seats at tables, or even welcomed into rooms that would make life more accessible. I see therapy as a folding chair—a portable, adaptable, and transformative support system that we unfold into our lives to create our own spaces to thrive. My ideal client is open, ready, and willing to work on themselves, name their inner demons, and resist the systemic barriers that have tried to dictate their paths.

I believe therapy is a space where you can unload things that you are struggling to carry alone, develop clear insight, build greater self-compassion, and address barriers that keep you from achieving your goals. The first step in doing any one of these things is building a strong relationship with your therapist. I strive to make this possible by providing an open, judgement-free, and warm space where you can share who you are and what you are struggling to manage. I regularly work with folx age 14 and up on finding ways to manage their anxious or depressive thinking, and alleviate their stress.

Have you been feeling unheard? Have you felt that others have been quick to label your distress, but not support your healing? Creating and holding space for folks to feel safe in, share, be authentic, be vulnerable, and heal is something I have felt called to do throughout my life. I am an adamant believer that individuals are the experts on their own experience, and view therapy as a partnership on a journey toward healing, for which an affirming and non-pathologizing space is essential.

It’s easy to get turned around when navigating the road to happiness; In fact, I’ve been lost myself! You can never be sure what this path has in store for you. One minute sweet sunshine is all around you, and the next thing you know, gray skies roll in, flooding our picnics. Tired traveler, I have a few questions for you. Do you often feel overwhelmed with your life? Are there times in which you don't feel supported? Are you feeling stuck and unsure how to move on? If you answered yes to any these questions, I would be honored to help you get your journey back on track. After all, you deserve someone on your side, rain or shine.

I usually find myself working with people who know there's something not quite right but aren't sure where to start. Are you struggling with anxiety and depression, and don't know why? Are relationships difficult, or do you feel like you haven't found your people? Has life suddenly just switched to "hard mode"? I especially enjoy working with people who are trying balance work and managing chronic illnesses, fellow social services employees, and LGBTQ+ clients. I love working with neurodivergence!

As a therapist with multiple intersecting identities, I understand our mental states are products of our social and environmental states. I aim to work collaboratively with the client to help access the strengths and resources they inherently possess. My areas of clinical interest include anxiety, depression, substance use, life transitions, grief, stress, trauma and identity concerns. I have a particular interest in supporting those who are LGBTQIA+ identified and other marginalized and oppressed populations.
