My doctoral work centered on issues related to infertility and grief/ loss.
With more than 30 years experience as a mental health professional-individual, group, and family therapist and educator of graduate social work students, I work with all ages, utilizing a variety of treatment modalities. For me, the relationship between therapist and client is central to safe, confidential, supportive exploration of all aspects of the human experience. It is out of this relationship that I help craft an individual plan with strategies tailored to achieve each person's goals.

Are you going through something that you could use a little help with right now? Stress, anxiety as a result of something life has dished out, relationship issues or just need someone to help you problem-solve...if so, you've come to the right person. Life provides plenty of opportunities for blessings, or lessons, and sometimes it helps to have someone to process those lessons with. Navigating the darker side of life, the difficult times is not easy but if you're willing to be open there is help out there to get through them stronger and wiser. Counseling isn't a quick fix, it's a learning process and it can really help.

I've been told my easy-going, approachable spirit provides quick comfort for those I encounter along my path. Whether it's humans, trees, or little critters strolling the landscape, I can't seem to help but beam with love and curiosity for all of life. Trust me - this isn't because I have lived some seamless walk-in-the-park existence. In fact, it's growing through the depths of my gut-wrenching heartaches, gnawing mistakes, and bold transitions that have allowed compassion to be my guide. I am guessing you found me because you are going through a heartache or transition yourself. Well, I am glad you're here.

Training, paired with lived experience, have guided me in specialty areas of grief, trauma, and caregiving for serious medical or mental illness.
Human beings are resilient. They survive unimaginable things through resourceful measures, though these can be incomprehensible to others. Sometimes, the very things people do to get through tough times can result in negative consequences (addictions, people-pleasing, perfectionism, suicidal/self-harming behaviors, procrastination). Some folks seek therapy to explore different ways of coping to decrease disruption in their lives. Some people use therapy to process events from earlier years while others focus on adjusting current behaviors. There is no wrong way on the path toward healing - it's all about learning what works for you.

I practice Integrative Psychotherapy, which incorporates all aspects of the person in the change process. Many people who seek counseling do so as a result of experiencing a problem that they cannot resolve on their own. This creates difficulties in moods, behaviors, and relationships as that problem begins to drain their energy and attention. My goal is to assist you in re-connecting with a sense of balance, or integration, in your life.

It can be scary to take the next step and talk to someone about your trauma history, anxiety, stress, loss, or shame.
The path you have been walking may be worn down, peace, clarity, joy, and fulfillment feel distant, the storms of anxiety, depression, and trauma have become overwhelming. You don't have to travel through the storm alone. It is in caring relationships that healing sparks and growth endures. In therapy, a healing relationship starts when a safe space b lossoms. In this safe space, I work with you to find the healing path you will step into.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
