I also specialize in depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideations, specifically in the LGBTQ population.
As I like to tell my clients, anyone at any stage of their lives can benefit from therapy. Maybe you're experiencing anxiety, depression, or life stress, etc. Therapy helps by having someone to talk with, process the stress, and formulate a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs. Therapy works best as a collaborative process between the therapist and client, working together to achieve a positive and supportive workplace where mental and emotional health can thrive.

Aside from my experience as a licensed counselor, I have +15 years of professional experience working with children, adolescents, and adults in areas of behavioral therapy (ABA), grief and loss, suicide awareness/prevention, disabilities and daily living skills, art/play therapy, and ASD.
As a mental health professional, I believe in creating a safe and genuine environment for a client to be free to acknowledge their most vulnerable self, without judgment. The client-counselor relationship is unique and collaborative, therefore the significance of a trusting bond cannot be overemphasized. I believe that the therapeutic relationship grows organically, with time, and at the client’s pace. Each client is unique, so I integrate approaches best suited to the individual and the situation–Psychodynamic, CBT, Solution Focused, and Mindfulness–but at the core of therapy is self-exploration.

Just because you wear it well doesn't mean its not heavy. Does your outward smile hide the pain you are feeling inside? Many of my clients have struggled with drugs or alcohol problems and have feelings of shame and hopelessness often trying to hide the issue from others. I've also helped many people who love someone; a spouse, child or parent with an addiction, but who have lost their sense of normalcy in the process. I also have expertise in treating problems like anxiety, depression, relationship problems and trauma/PTSD.

Everyone has a story, with both highs and lows, both challenges and gifts and with infinite opportunities to grow. As in any story, the setting and other characters all influence you and what happens, including institutional systems, social constructs and family dynamics. The roles we take on and the patterns we develop to get through one chapter may not always be helpful to us in later ones. I believe there is power and healing in telling your story and that with guidance, you can own it, rewrite aspects of it, and choose what role you play. I believe we are all capable of changing our lives and that no change is insignificant.

The paradoxical theory of change says that "change happens when a person becomes what they are, not when they try to become what they are not.” I guide my clients to the mirror and help them to squarely face themselves- their strengths, weaknesses, past traumas and future hopes- and know that they are good enough. From that place of self-compassion we can determine the right tools to support you as you set off on a life path that deeply motivates and satisfies you.

Kids are often just as clueless as we are, when trying to figure out why they are acting out. Everyone experiences an asverse reaction to life that at times may feel impossible to navigate. These reactions are intensified and more difficult if you are a child without the tools you need to express yourself. Trauma often contributes and deepens the pain we are feeling, and close us off from healthy expression, growth and healing. Many of us struggle with impulse control issues, self-defeating patterns, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. I have extensive work experience with children, adolescents, and individuals with trauma.

Have you been worried, sad, stressed, or even facing daily challenges that seem unbearable to manage? Trying to manage our emotions can be difficult, and at times, our mind and body are trying to warn us to stop and take some time to focus on ourselves, but we ignore it. I’ve experienced this myself and am still learning new ways to cope. These are common feelings that most of us experience when we are struggling to heal and regulate our thoughts and emotions due to life stressors. I understand it can be scary to take that leap in seeking help, but you’ve already accomplished the first step of browsing for resources, which is great!

Many of us seek out therapy for different reasons; to gain better insight about ourselves and others, to be able to see the bigger picture more clearly, or to meet specific goals. I aim to offer a space where you can share without holding back, and without judgment, and where we can collaborate in gaining insight into impactful, long-held patterns and beliefs.

As a philosophical therapist, I've found there are life-altering narratives to be discovered and created through thoughtful conversation. Our thoughts are our reality. Examining those thoughts gives us the greatest opportunity for alignment. I help my clients explore their unique meanings and experiences, empowering them to influence new habits and reach subconscious realms to bring clarity and affect change.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
