Like most women, you just want to feel supported. Are you having trouble sleeping because your mind won’t shut off? Are feelings of sadness, depression, irritability or reactivity starting to affect your everyday? Are you anxious, panicky, having intrusive thoughts? Do you feel mentally trapped & emotionally drained? Do you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? Some days, you feel like you can’t even BREATHE. It feels like your own silent struggle is constantly eating away at you. Maybe you are trying to conceive/pregnant/ postpartum/in the thick of motherhood?Maybe you're entering a new chapter or transition?

When speaking with people about finding a therapist, I like to compare the process to finding the right hairdresser or making a new friend: If someone doesn’t match what you’re looking for or help you envision and plan for a healthier or more fulfilling life, then move on to the next one! Therapy is very personal, and I take a person-centered approach. My own experiences as a survivor of postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) - as well as firsthand knowledge of and experience in coping with family adjustment issues and addiction in loved ones – provide me the insight needed to have meaningful sessions with my clients.

I am a clinical therapist (with lived experience as a mama) who supports women and men through their conception, pregnancy, and parenting journey.
Becoming a mother or father is HARD and overwhelming at times. You may be working through this new transition in life and trying to figure out all the things. We are told to take care of ourselves while selflessly giving everything we have to our babies and family. This can lead us to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, emotional, irritable, and even angry. You may be struggling with finding yourself in this new role or longing to feel like yourself again. Your relationships with your partner, friends, and family may have changed. Your childhood experiences may have come flooding back.

I’m Katherine, a therapist with a specialty in Infant Mental Health and Perinatal Mental Health. I am committed to supporting adults, parents, caregivers, and children in their journey to deeper connection. My work focuses on struggles in parenting, the perinatal and postpartum period, attachment, adoption, and trauma. So often, childhood experiences show up in adult relationships and parenting. We find ourselves carrying the weight of the past in our present selves. I use a psychodynamic approach to therapy, walking alongside my clients as they explore memories and experiences that impact their lives.

While there are many joys of "babyhood" often couples experience postpartum anxiety and depression and some support with education, sleep training and compassion can alleviate many uncomfortable symptoms.
I believe in meeting my clients where they are today with a strong sense of empathy and compassion. I have been working with families, teens and adults since 2001; treating a variety of struggles such as anxiety, depression, relationships issues, parenting concerns, sexual dysfunction/health and more. I find that building a strong connection with my clients is essential in making progress in the therapeutic relationship. If you are struggling with work, life stress, relationships, and other transitional issues this is your first step. These roadblocks that keep you from living your best life can be overcome!

You are not alone. I wish someone had said that to me after my daughter was born. So many say having a child is supposed to be the happiest time in your life; for me, and many others, that isn’t always the case. Every human is going to experience developmental shifts during the course of their lives and while these shifts are most often associated with children, adults experience these too. "Early Mom Development", the process in which a woman develops into a new version of herself, is a time full of uncertainty, chaos, overwhelm and self-doubt. Most women keep to themselves, struggling in silence, instead of receiving support.

Has something happened that changed everything? Feeling lost, overwhelmed, or trapped by uncertainty? You’re not alone. Picking up the pieces of unexpected challenges can be daunting. It doesn’t have to be a solitary struggle.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Therapists

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioral therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviors. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.

Are there specific medications for postpartum depression?

In 2019, the FDA approved the first medication designed to treat postpartum depression. The medication is called brexanolone and is delivered intravenously by a medical professional over the course of a few days. However, typical antidepressants, which are more accessible, can also treat postpartum depression. The disorder is often best treated through a combination of medication and therapy.
