Yoga therapy is an approach to overall health and well-being from a comprehensive, whole-person view to address an array of imbalances from lifestyle mismanagement, stress, anxiety, disease, trauma, and more.
Hello and welcome, I’m Hilary, a certified yoga therapist through the International Associations of Yoga Therapists with YogaLife Institute. In addition, a 500 hr certified yoga teacher through Yoga Alliance, earning my first 200 hr yoga teacher training through The Mindful School of Yoga in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2018. Yoga has been an integral aspect of my life as the teenage years approached and big changes began physically, mentally, and socially. It has been one of my brightest guiding lights, continuously leading back to myself from then until today.

My passion is working with people that struggle with traumatic life experiences - big and small, religious trauma, and adult children of alcoholics.
Are you struggling with trauma? You might feel anxious, disconnected from your body, feeling the need to constantly distract yourself, or not feeling like yourself. This may be in response to a bigger life event, loss, life transitions, or something you’ve been unable to access. Sometimes, our responses are connected to childhood trauma, religious trauma, work trauma, or from past relationships. You may also question if your responses are connected to trauma at all. You want to live a life where it feels good to be present with yourself and in relationships. Where you can be authentically yourself.

I have noticed my patients who live with depression, anxiety, and trauma tend to benefit the most from our time together.
If you are looking to begin therapy for the first time ever, first time in a while, or are just needing something new, I am happy to be that person for you. My patients have informed me that I offer a presence that they had not yet experienced in their lives. As I was taught by my theology teacher at my Catholic high school, "the greatest yearning of the human heart is to love and be loved." While I don't agree with everything that institution told me, I find this sentiment relevant in my work as a therapist: we are social creatures. "Rarely, if ever, are any of us healed in isolation. Healing is an act of communion," bell hooks.

An individual once asked what I did for a living and what it taught me. After a moment, I offered spending time with people that life has stomped on and I learned how resilient people can be. Professional experience has focussed upon treatment and evaluation for those who have faced severe life trauma. This has included combat veterans, abuse victims, as well as medical and environmental catastrophe. A respect for families and children under stress prompted work with issues such as divorce, custody, parental rights and adoption. Experience with militay personel, and others who were resilient under extreme stress fostered work in assessing and develping leadership in roles such as corporate psychology and career development.

My overall goal with clients is to help clients amplify their voice, help them release their anguish from past trauma, health their inner being/child, and navigate life while understanding social constructs that impact a client's daily life.
We have all been through things in life, and some items can be challenging to heal or talk about. Those are normal and validating feelings, but sometimes we need someone to talk to. To help navigate and conceptualize these experiences and gain coping skills. Communicating and healthily processing these emotions can be difficult, depending on our intersectional identities, to do out of fear of being stigmatized. That is why I am passionate about providing a safe space. My goal as a therapist is to help clients nourish their brains in practices that are best for them.

As a real human who has suffered and gone through it, and an EMDRIA-approved integrative therapist, I have successfully helped clients heal from a wide variety of negative beliefs, anxieties, painful images and memories, shock traumas, sexual/emotional/physical abuse, chronic health and pain issues, shame, and fears.
Life can lead us down some pretty confusing paths sometimes, leaving us feeling crazy, unsettled, and totally lost. You don't have to feel like this forever. I work with individuals, couples, and teens who just need some relief - from single-incident and complex PTSD, negative beliefs, anxiety, panic, stress, relationship struggles, and other unresolved issues. Many of my clients are insightful, curious, growth-oriented people who are seeking something beyond the usual therapy approach.

I seek to help those that are struggling with familial conflict, defiance in the home, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other issues.
Life's struggles and experiences can cause us to feel overwhelmed, or even at times, out of control. We want to change how we are feeling or how our child feels, but we don't know how. We all experience moments like this in our lives and often we can persevere. At times though we need some help, and that's okay.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
