health), I use my expertise in pain neuroscience to work with my clients to make functional and behavioral changes in line with the scientific research on how to reverse pain neural pathways and train the nervous system to break the cycle of pain.
My patients often feel like they've tried everything and still haven’t found relief. That takes a toll. My specialty as a health psychologist focuses on chronic pain management, helping people manage the severity of their pain along with the frustration, sadness, exhaustion, and grief that come along with chronic pain. When it comes to managing pain, having a therapist who specializes in pain matters. I find fulfillment in helping patients like you achieve better quality of life, achieve lasting health improvements, and reach personal goals that otherwise couldn't be met.

As someone with a history of trauma and chronic illness, I understand these connections very well. During your time in therapy with me, you will get someone who understands on a personal level the difficulties you may be experiencing.

Whether it's the pain of your today, your fears for tomorrow, or the torment of your yesterday that is holding you back, I am here to help branch out and move forward to the life you want to be living.
My passion is working with clients who identify with some (or all) of the following Intersections: LGBTQIA+, Ethically Non-monogamous, Chronically Ill, and Neurodivergent (especially late diagnosis ND). Most of my clinical experience has been with clients whose identities exist at these intersections, in addition to Complex Trauma. I want to help you build the life you have only imagined by aiding you in identifying and healing from your core wounds. This is done by collaborating in order to understand your unique System (both internal and external) - from that insight we work to build Self-Worth, Self-Esteem, and Self-Compassion.

No matter how hard you try to move forward, you feel like your taking one step back. You’re a high performer with perfectionism tendencies and always put on a smile, which helps you forget your pain. You feel you will never be fully happy and never be able to fully enjoy life how others do, because of your many losses, attributing to your decreased self esteem. You may keep friends and family at a distance, to protect yourself from yet another inevitable loss. You may have stopped exercising and taking care of yourself the way you used to, since it takes too much work and you're just surviving at the end of another long day.

I approach therapy with the ideology that life is a culmination of interconnected parts. Feelings stem from experiences, experiences influence perceptions, and subsequently guide many of the decisions one makes in life. When individuals experience stagnation or challenges, it may be connected to an array of life experiences. This may lead to a challenge with seeing beyond that which is. The subsequent result may serve as a breeding ground for emotional and physical pain, challenges in interpersonal relationships and unresolved grief.

Chronic Pain Therapists

How does chronic pain therapy work?

Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?

Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophizing, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?

Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
