I use Attachment and Psychodynamic Theory and support clients through the use of Narrative Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to address their individual needs.
My clients come to therapy because they are looking for support in facing life transitions; they may be dealing with a health diagnosis, new parenting stage, or shifting family dynamics. Often, when life is difficult or not going the way we had planned, we fight against what IS with what we think it should be. My clients want to find joy and purpose in the life they have and are looking for a safe place to explore their life stories to find strength and light. I also work with interracial families on racial identity development and with white folks wanting to do antiracist work while exploring what it means to be white.

My approach draws on a range of psychological, cognitive, and behavioral treatments, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, pain neuroscience education, and mindfulness-based interventions.
My patients often feel like they've tried everything and still haven’t found relief. That takes a toll. My specialty as a health psychologist focuses on chronic pain management, helping people manage the severity of their pain along with the frustration, sadness, exhaustion, and grief that come along with chronic pain. When it comes to managing pain, having a therapist who specializes in pain matters. I find fulfillment in helping patients like you achieve better quality of life, achieve lasting health improvements, and reach personal goals that otherwise couldn't be met.

In these areas I have used DBT, mindfulness, CBT, SFBT and ACT.
At times life’s struggles can lead to a need to adjust to things thrown your way unexpectedly. When feelings of anxiety, sadness or adjustments become overwhelming, we may benefit from an objective partner to help us think things through and sort out our choices. I specialize in working with Black, BIPOC, African American teens and adults experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, chronic health concerns, work related issues and life transitions. If you could benefit from a safe space, an empathetic ear, a non-judgmental voice or a reflective place of insight, my training and experience can be of assistance to you.

Through radical self-acceptance, I am here to help you discover your inner healer so we can courageously face the shadow of your struggles.
You’ve been living by everyone else’s needs instead of your own. You want to stop abandoning yourself, but everyone else is relying on you, and you can’t let them down. You attempt to prioritize your wellbeing, but every time you plan to do something for yourself, you feel a pervasive sense of guilt. Knowing you’re everyone’s go-to counselor and cheerleader provides temporary relief from the profound feelings of worthlessness that plague you. While you’re dedicated to the happiness of others, the true reason for your incredible care is that you’re terrified of being alone and disappointing others.

I achieve this by providing validation, warmth, acceptance, and empathy while challenging you to implement the changes you want to make.
As a clinician, I believe in meeting clients where they are, identifying their strengths and barriers, in order to assist in developing a personalized plan for treatment and life management. I do not believe in a “cookie-cutter” method, and I am very open to exploring new methods and using multiple approaches to help each client individually. I assist my clients with understanding their behavior patterns and the changes they want to make while in treatment. Being in therapy means some form of change. Change can be different from client to client because each client has unique needs.

Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapists

How does acceptance and commitment therapy work?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy encourages a person to listen to their self-talk. A person’s inner dialog can be indicative of how they treat themselves. ACT also encourages self-compassion; this can lead to a better understanding of negative thought patterns and emotional states. This understanding can then lead the individual to needed behavior change.

What are the goals of acceptance and commitment therapy?

The goal of acceptance and commitment is to expand a person’s psychological flexibility, a trait that encourages an individual to live in the present moment and to accept all their thoughts, feelings, and emotions, even ones that are difficult such as sadness and anxiety. In ACT, this acceptance is congruent with the individual’s values and beliefs.

Does acceptance and commitment therapy work for depression?

Acceptance and commitment therapy is effective for depression because it allows the individual to view their discomfort and suffering differently. Depressive feelings about relationship heartaches, for example, are a part of life. A despondent person learns to let go of their struggles and instead view their painful thoughts and feelings with compassion. This will lead the individual toward positive change.

How long are people typically in acceptance and commitment therapy?

A typical acceptance and commitment therapy session is 50 minutes long with one session per week. Treatment for common problems such as anxiety, depression, or relationship difficulties can last between eight weeks to four months. However, more severe cases may require more than one session a week and/or a longer time frame for treatment.
