I have been in practice as a psychologist for many years and have helped adults presenting with different types of symptoms, issues and/or concerns. I treated individuals presenting with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, anxiety, adjustment and relationship difficulties, to name a few. I taught psychology students in doctoral level programs about helping individuals traumatized by violence and/or by other traumatic events. I also taught students how to help individuals dealing with stress, anxiety and/or depression related to medical conditions.

I and my colleagues at the Institute for Hope and Human Flourishing understand that living with trauma, depression or anxiety, or having thoughts of suicide, means that a person is in a lot of pain and it's hard to see through the pain to find solutions that might help.
Sometimes life is so painful that even remembering reasons to stay alive can be very difficult. Life situations, such as grief or traumatic events, can cause day to day functioning to feel insurmountable. Finding coping skills and solutions happens when you have the freedom to talk about anxiety, grief, depression, trauma and suicide with the help of a skilled clinician who is comfortable working with it all -- and who understands, when working with youth, the importance of coaching parents so that they feel prepared to help their child through an emotionally difficult time.

I specialize in family therapy and working with LGBTQIA+ youth, and teens facing self-harm, suicidal ideation, and trauma.
Is your child or teen struggling with anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, trauma, or challenges related to their LGBTQIA+ identity? These issues can deeply impact their well-being, family relationships, friendships, and school. As a caregiver, you may feel overwhelmed by the pressure to provide the right support, especially when societal expectations may fuel feelings of shame, blame, or guilt. You are not alone. I understand how hard you're working, shaped by your own experiences and upbringing. With empathy and support, we can partner in a plan toward healing and connection for your child and your whole family.

I know how scary it can be to start therapy and talk through your worries and struggles, but I believe challenging ourselves to step outside of our comfort zone can create positive changes in our lives! I promise to create a warm, welcoming, and non-judgmental environment where you feel heard and safe. My goal is to promote unconditional positive regard, genuineness, and mutual respect with all of my clients. I believe everyone has their own story, struggles, and goals - there is no "one size fits all" when it comes to counseling approaches. Together, we can explore your needs and tailor approaches specific to you.

Do you feel like no matter how much you try to “fake it” you struggle to “make it”? Life isn’t always easy and often times we judge our self-worth on the past. If you are ready to work on those habits that no longer serve you and empower yourself to have a better sense of well-being, happiness, joy and peace I would be honored to take that journey with you.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
