I integrate a psychodynamic framework with somatic and attachment-based interventions.
You carry deep wounds from your past, making it difficult to fully open up to others. You feel guarded, hesitant to trust, and afraid of getting hurt again. Despite longing for connection, you struggle to let down your barriers, fearing vulnerability and rejection. Although you are scared, you know it's time to do something different. My prior experience lends itself well to older teens and adults with histories of trauma, relational difficulties, mood concerns, and grief. I am also passionate about working with LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent individuals.

When life is difficult there are people trained to support and uplift. Through therapy we develop an awareness of who we are, where we have been, and where we are going. Knowledge and emotional sensitivity is empowering, ultimately increasing an internally driven sense of direction and comfort.

I believe that in order for therapy to be effective, it has to be individualized to your specific needs, meaning my approach is flexible and responsive to your unique situation. The type of therapy I practice is meant to engage you in a collaborative working relationship, where your strengths are honored and respected, your feedback is taken seriously, and we work together to help address the challenges you are experiencing. I try to be respectful of and responsive to what will be helpful to you in session, to assist you in addressing the concerns that brought you to therapy.

With over 40 years of experience as a psychotherapist I am committed to helping others find solutions to their problems in a safe, caring and confidential environment. I believe as adults we are responsible for the choices we make in life. If we don't like the way things are, and can't accept our past, it is our responsibility to learn to recognize and change the things we can, especially our self-defeating behaviors. I believe that with professional counseling we can increase our knowledge and skills for making better choices, finding solutions to our problems, and making changes that last.

We are the writers of our own story; therapy just provides an editor to sort out some of the more challenging parts of that story. I believe everyone's life experience is unique and, because of that, you truly know yourself best. All that being said, Hello! I am Alisa (ah-lee-sah), a licensed professional counselor. I received my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Eastern Michigan University, and bachelor's in Psychology with a minor in Communication at Oakland University. During my internship, I spent time at a women's shelter working with survivors of domestic abuse and interpersonal partner violence.

With individuals I use methods that draw from psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral orientations.
Be more at ease with yourself and in your relationships. Be better able to expand your life and experience more enjoyment. Decreased anxiety and improved mood are essential to unlocking these possibilities. You can develop tools for resolving present issues and ongoing struggles. I am an experienced therapist who works with a wide range of presenting issues including anxiety, depression, situational stress, and issues that arise with life changes and challenges. I provide a warm, safe setting for expression of your concerns. I work in a collaborative format toward understanding self, moving through issues, and working toward goals.

I use an eclectic theoretical approach to therapy: marital therapy (systems theory), behavioral, cognitive and psychodynamic.
Listening to what you say, and to what you don't say is very important to me. I am often told that talking to me was the very first time that a client had their feelings accepted. Helping others honor the unique perspective with which they see the world is the best way to enable a person to trust their feelings, to value their experiences, and to lead a richer life. I do believe that leopards can change their spots! I consult with psychotherapy and life-coaching clients in my office and also by phone across the country.

Most often I work with people seeking help with the common challenges of adult life: relationship/family issues; grief and loss; adult child recovery; depression; codependency; addictions; health concerns; career/financial challenges; and unfulfilled spiritual yearnings - drawing from cognitive-behaviorial, psychodynamic, and transpersonal methodology.
Finding the best individual and marriage therapist for you can seem daunting. Talking to us, asking questions, paying attention to your feelings and intuition, all help. My 30 years experience as a compassionate, well-trained psychotherapist give me the background and skills to support you in achieving your goals, which might include: resolving immediate symptoms; recognizing and appreciating core strengths; developing deeper self awareness and acceptance; and learning the skills of empowered, effective communication. I am experienced in working with the newer spiritual growth paradigms, as in the work of Eckhart Tolle.

For training, I have a doctorate degree where I studied psychodynamic psychotherapy.
I believe the ideal therapist is a combination of nurturing and straightforward, and this is what I strive to embody in my work. In other words, I am sensitive and compassionate as I know life can be extremely painful and challenging. At the same time, I make every effort to "keep it real" with my patients. I try to point out things about themselves that may be difficult to hear, as sometimes this is the only way we can grow. I always maintain an emotionally supportive and environment, but you can also trust that I will be honest with you about what I'm thinking.

I approach therapy believing that we need more than talk therapy to unlock our wellness and healing. We need to tune into our body! I use a combination of modalities to guide our work, namely tenets of somatic trauma healing and psychodynamic psychology. Together, we’ll work to deepen your understanding of self and the world around you by exploring your body as a shape, molded by a lifetime of your lived experiences. We’ll honor all parts of who you are, knowing that the "best" and "worst" versions of you both deserve dignity and care.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
