Most often I work with people seeking help with the common challenges of adult life: relationship/family issues; grief and loss; adult child recovery; depression; codependency; addictions; health concerns; career/financial challenges; and unfulfilled spiritual yearnings - drawing from cognitive-behaviorial, psychodynamic, and transpersonal methodology.
Finding the best individual and marriage therapist for you can seem daunting. Talking to us, asking questions, paying attention to your feelings and intuition, all help. My 30 years experience as a compassionate, well-trained psychotherapist give me the background and skills to support you in achieving your goals, which might include: resolving immediate symptoms; recognizing and appreciating core strengths; developing deeper self awareness and acceptance; and learning the skills of empowered, effective communication. I am experienced in working with the newer spiritual growth paradigms, as in the work of Eckhart Tolle.

For many people depression and anxiety, as well as other mental health problems can be difficult to treat successfully due to unresolved 'developmental trauma', or trauma related to the attachment type you had to your parent(s) / caregiver(s). I utilize psychodynamic psychotherapy and attachment theory which mainly deal with early connections, good or bad, with primary caretakers. I am also trained in many new treatments based on the latest understanding of brain science, that are effective in treating unresolved developmental trauma, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

I utilize a strength-based integrative approach, the power of a strong therapeutic relationship, and a combination of attachment and psychodynamic principles with evidence based behavior modification strategies to help individuals create the live they want, enhance relationships and connections with others, and uncover their true potential.
I have experience working individually with children, adolescents, and adults as well as families. I strive to connect with all of my clients on a deep authentic level while fostering a safe and supportive environment. People develop conscious and subconscious strategies of getting through difficult periods of their lives. Frequently, these strategies result in maladaptive behaviors, thought patterns, and interpersonal struggles. Through empathetic connections, nonjudgmental acceptance, and evidence based modalities, we can unearth long-standing behavior patterns or negative perceptions that may be holding you back from your goals.

Your story matters. Sometimes that can be hard to fathom in a world of so many but it’s true. Everything that you have been through- your experiences in life, your relationships and your point of view - all matter. They are just elements of what has shaped you into who you are today, how you move through each day, and how you might envision your future.

Are you struggling with dealing with the storms of life? Please know-You are not alone! Many of us experience challenges, yet oftentimes it is difficult to find a safe person and space to express these concerns without being judged. Life changes constantly! Do every day events leave you feeling overwhelmed, drained and unmotivated? Every day activities seem to be extremely difficult. Constant demands of family, work and relationships are stressful, and you know it’s time to make some changes. Losses of all kinds (the loss of a loved one, job, or relationship), can trigger a mirage of emotions or feelings of lack of control.

Are you constantly telling yourself, “Be strong!" and try to ignore your racing thoughts? You seem to start each day more mentally exhausted than the day before, wishing and hoping for something to change. Maybe you lost a loved one, your child, a pet, were told you have a chronic illness/disease, realized that your relationship is in shambles, are haunted by childhood experiences, or the pressures of your life/ job have begun to take their toll. You have thought of therapy but rationalize with yourself that “it isn’t so bad” and that you can keep trying to “fix yourself” only to find yourself circling in a self-blaming pattern.

Welcome! I specialize in working with adult children of (and/or partners to) narcissists and the emotionally immature/abusive/unavailable. My clients say they’re relieved to have found a therapist who "gets" them. I am ready to "get" and care for you, too. Are you experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-worth, self-doubt/blame, shame, guilt, a sense of obligation? Are you an expert "people pleaser" because you had to be? Did you receive attention, love, acceptance based on certain conditions? Did you experience controlling behavior and/or inconsistency/instability that felt unsafe? Is it hard to advocate for yourself? I get it.

You hold yourself to a higher standard yet, lately seem to have lost focus and struggle to maintain your motivation. You find yourself starting to believe the small voice in the back of your head stating that you are not good enough. You go to lengths to take great care of others, however, do not extend the same love and care to yourself. You put on a happy face and pretend that all is well, however, often can feel very much alone and anxious. You may feel consumed by: sadness, fear, anger or hopelessness; and even the simplest of tasks seems overwhelming. You long to get back to your old self and find joy and meaning in life.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
