My main theoretical approaches are existential, feminist, narrative, and experiential. Most often, sessions with my clients involve recounting important narratives to the client and looking at word choice when story-telling. This will often lead into a philosophical discussion about the values described in the narrative, as well as an exploration of societal, familial, and gender narratives. We often do this through talking, but we sometimes do this through a specific music listening technique called "Guided Imagery and Music" (GIM).
In my sessions, my clients and I work together to break down any hierarchies in the room. We all have valuable knowledge that can move us towards meeting therapeutic goals. I welcome any feedback that my clients have about my approach, what is working for them in the session and what is not.
I feel that the best goals come directly from clients. Some clients know what they would like to work on right away while others need a little time (or trial and error) to come to these goals. I like to have open conversations about diagnoses and goals, and we can revisit these ideas as often as the client would like.
