I see clients seeking help with issues of depression, anxiety, and trauma. Life can be hard and nonsensical at times. Working together collaboratively the goal is to make sense of your experience and tap new resources for wellness. I also work couples having relationship difficulties who are looking for tools to communicate with one another more openly while honoring the both partners' experiences.

Prior to living in Maine, I lived in Ger many for 6 1/2 years where I treated active duty military and their families at the U.
As a Clinical Psychologist, I listen with an unconditional ear to the needs of each person I work with. I engage with people who are experiencing emotional pain, sadness, and worry, as well as those who are facing grief, life changes, relationship problems, a history of trauma, and people who are having difficulty adapting to a new medical diagnosis or a chronic medical condition. In my experience, growth means finding a way to become unstuck from a place of discomfort, and moving forward with confidence into personal development.

At one point or another we can all benefit from what therapy has to offer. I commit to creating a compassionate space for you to break from your daily routine and shed the layers no longer serving you. I believe counseling to be a collaborative journey towards growth, adaptation, and healing.

I currently run multiple men's groups and will soon be starting a new one in the Portland area.
I specialize in helping men who struggle with isolation, feelings of anxiety and depression, blocks to intimacy, addiction to pornography, lack of male friends, a feeling of being lost or without a deep sense of purpose, or feeling numb and disconnected from life. As men, we are socialized to keep everything to ourselves, which makes it hard for us to admit when we're lonely and hurting and in need of support. Many of us grew up with fathers that were absent, abusive, or detached from us emotionally, leaving us without a respectable model of masculinity and without much direction in life.

Going through life feeling misunderstood, disconnected from others, uncomfortable in your skin, and that the world isn’t to be trusted can be a lonely and frightening endeavor. Using drugs and or alcohol may seem to be the only real relief. Everyone has two sides to them, one believing nothing will ever change and another hoping for a better way. I provide a safe and supportive environment for you to explore the negative self-talk and inner critic that prevents you from being your authentic self, leading you to use substances to cope.

"The individual is like a garden to be tended, not a machine to be repaired". I practice Motivational Interviewing; this is a collaborative conversation to strengthen a person's own motivation for change. I hold a few principles that govern the work. First, I will focus on you being heard and believed, Second, be kind. Third, teach and demonstrate empathy and compassion and be helpful with your internal conflict... I practice being in the here and now with individual, couple and group work.

After 35 years practicing as a clinical psychologist I have come to understand that effective treatment must be determined specifically for each client and applied in a respectful and cooperative manner. Treatment choices are made based on the uniqueness of the individual, his or her goals, and current life circumstances. They may include behavior therapy, cognitive therapy, in-depth therapy, or couples and family therapy. One treatment modality is not appropriate for all.

My intention as a therapist is to create an environment that is supportive, positive, and in which the client has both freedom of expression and freedom from judgment. My work is grounded in the principles of mindfulness, and utilizes meditation, cognitive behavioral strategies and biofeedback techniques. My approach to psychotherapy is practical: by addressing our patterns of thought and behavior we impact how we think, react and feel. Even small changes in these daily habits can improve wellness and bring clarity to concerns, goals, and ideas for more creative, sustainable approaches to living.

I enjoy working with families, children, adolescents, college students, vets, older adults and many people who are just trying to figure out who they are (and, let's face it, we all have some child to us, which is why I say I'm a child therapist even though I see people of all ages).
I work from a perspective that focuses on joining you in the present and, at the same time, putting your current experiences and perspectives in context by exploring how your personal history currently impacts your life. I'm happy to meet with most adults, couples, families, and kids as well as adolescents (just remember that no matter the age of your child, there will probably be some family therapy). I take a laid back approach, but I'm serious about your health. Please get in touch and let's see if I'm a good fit for you.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
