Everyone is subject to facing challenges in life, some more difficult than others. It's common to need extra support during these times, it can often bring us comfort, reassurance and clarity. Remembering that we are strong, resilient and that we hold our own solutions can be empowering and provide confidence. When faced with mental health related symptoms, addictions issues or family addiction issues, it's easy to become overwhelmed and forget what we need to do to take care of ourselves. Seeking therapy is a brave and decisive way to provide self care. We are often more kind to others than we are to ourselves, prioritize you.

My clients are welcomed into a safe and positive environment designed to foster personal change. This process is a journey of partnership. I believe that my part in counseling is that of a guide and support for individuals seeking new ways to meet their life challenges. I use cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness to help with achieving personal goals. Breathing techniques are basic to reducing anxiety and stress. Along with individual and couples counseling, I offer group counseling as an effective tool in the process of change. Stress reduction, improved communication skills and enhanced self awareness are the goal.

I am a solution-focused therapist who believes that therapy with straight talk, a willingness to try new things - and a liberal dash of humor – leads to growth, healing, and more joy. Your brain isn’t broken (even if it feels that way) and you have strengths that you can use to help you feel better. We can identify your strengths and work on using them more effectively so you can tackle the sticky areas of life that are weighing you down.

As a dually licensed therapist I specialize in both mental health therapy as well as substance abuse and affected other counseling. Although I am able to provide either form of treatment alone, it is often appropriate to combine the two as a treatment for those experiencing difficulties due to the co-occurrence of symptoms, whether they have the substance abuse issue themselves or are affected by a loved one's substance abuse.

Are you a highly-motivated, ambitious individual who thrives on the pursuit of excellence? Is your goal-oriented nature constantly driving you towards perfection? I'm Jackie, clinical therapist with A Simple Therapy, and I’m right there with you. I understand the unique challenges (and advantages!) that come with a high-achieving personality. While others perceive you effortlessly juggling numerous responsibilities, you’re feeling like an imposter- overwhelmed, burned out, empty, and in dire need of establishing boundaries. Perhaps you’ve experienced a major transition and your old ways of succeeding just aren’t working anymore.

Thanks for taking the first step with me; I'm Belle and I am an Asian American clinician, community builder, born and raised in Maine. When I am not in the office, you can probably find me in search of my next oat milk latte, or catching up on my reading in a local coffee shop. Other things I enjoy (in no particular order) include: Cultivating eclectic playlists on Spotify, being near my rescue dog, taking a Spin class, and going way down a Wiki hole. As a therapist, I believe our relationships and how we engage within them shape who we are, the meanings we create, and our outlooks on life.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
