My work is informed by a belief that although our perceptions may be shaped by our histories, we have the capacity to both benefit from and transcend past life experiences. I use cognitive behavioral, insight-oriented and supportive strategies to help individuals identify and address areas of importance to them. Based on the needs and wishes of each client, we will look at past events and current beliefs and patterns of behavior to move toward a rewarding future.

I work with individuals, ages 18 and up, to address a variety of concerns, including (but not limited to) Depression, Anxiety, Borderline Personality Disorder, and Post-Traumatic Stress. My background is in Depth Psychology, which means that in addition to helping clients contain symptoms, I help them to explore what is behind those symptoms. As uncomfortable as some emotional experiences can be, what we call "symptoms" often contain valuable information about what we want and need and the state of our-selves.

As a licensed clinical social worker, I help individuals with a range of life challenges. I have training and expertise in the areas of anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, parenting support, creative blocks, grief and loss, work/school stress, trauma, and important life transitions. I view therapy as a collaborative process between therapist and client focused on exploring your concerns in an honest, active, and effective manner. Therapy involves sharing your thoughts and feelings, shedding light on and understanding relational and behavioral patterns, and reflecting on how past experiences may impact you now.

Trauma can be defined as our emotional and psychological response to a distressing event. It can be difficult to resolve traumatic memories when the event and emotional response validate a negative core belief we hold about ourselves. I am an EMDR trained therapist and I believe strongly in the efficacy of EMDR in resolving trauma and negative core beliefs. I also use existential philosophy to inform my practice, meaning I focus on self-awareness, relationships, personal power, free will, and self-determined choices.

What about the morning after... do you cringe or decide not to think about what you said or did, or do you not remember anything at all? Do you ever secretly wonder if you have a problem? Just like the gardener I am in my spare time, I wish to nurture your individual growth and support you to adapt and thrive in the garden of your life. I wish to understand who you are, find your strengths, feed your unique wants and needs, and root out the problems and issues that are getting in the way of your ability to blossom. Much like the roots of a plant, I believe that digging in and creating a safe place of acceptance, warmth, trust and empathy (the soil) provides the groundwork to explore challenges and aspirations in one’s life. In partnership, and with consistent care and intentional choices, your life can flourish.

I became a therapist because I believe that we are all longing for connection, and to be seen and valued. I believe that in the context of a trusting therapeutic relationship, people can develop the skills they need to feel more at peace and to connect more deeply with others. In my practice I integrate mindfulness practices to help clients learn to better cope with stress, enhance their well-being, and improve overall balance and equanimity. I work with adults of all ages on a variety of issues. I have a particular passion for working with helping professionals and caregivers to support the unique needs of caring for others.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
